Live Action Lilo & Stitch Says ‘Aloha’ to Their Stitch at D23

As a lifelong Disney devotee who grew up with Lilo and Stitch, the news of the live-action adaptation has me feeling as giddy as a schoolgirl at her first Elvis concert! The thought of seeing my favorite blue alien come to life is almost too much to bear. I’ve seen every iteration of Stitch, from his debut in the original film to his countless merchandise, and I can’t wait to see what they do with him this time around.

Hey there, fellow film enthusiasts! It seems the universe of live-action remakes has been buzzing with news on everyone’s favorite gal and her alien pal, Lilo & Stitch, ever since Elvis strutted his way onto the big screen. Now, I don’t believe in coincidences – especially not when it comes to blockbuster movies! Here’s a lowdown on what we can expect from this upcoming flick, including a sneak peek at our mischievous ExtraTerrestrial friend.

A live action Stitch?

As a movie aficionado reporting in, let me confirm that the chaos-causing character, reminiscent of Stitch from our beloved cartoons, has struck again – this time, at D23! His grand entrance was on Friday night, and just like his adorable yet mischievous demeanor, he’s as fluffy as ever.

Who’s behind experiment 626 this time?

The filmmaker behind “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On,” Dean Fleischer Camp, has been selected to direct a live-action version of Stitch. This character needs to convincingly portray both a blue dog and an alien. Initially, Jon M. Chu was in discussions to direct back in 2020. Previously, it was announced that horror writer Mike Van Waes would write the script, but now Chris Kekaniokalani Bright will be responsible for the screenplay instead.

Who’s on the Big Island?

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Sanders is back to voice the character of Stitch in an upcoming production. Courtney B. Vance will also star in this project, playing Cobra Bubbles – a social worker who wears sunglasses and has a past as a CIA agent. Interestingly, it was revealed that Cobra Bubbles is none other than Dr. Jumba Jookiba, Stitch’s father and a genius scientist. Meanwhile, Billy Magnussen will portray Agent Pleakley, the fabulous sidekick to Dr. Jumba.

In a recent update from The Hollywood Reporter, it’s been announced that the role of the girl who nips at Mertle will be portrayed by Maia Kealoha, a Hawaiian actress making her film debut as Lilo. Sydney Elizebeth Agudong has been cast as Lilo’s elder sister/legal guardian, Nani. Initially, Kahiau Machado was chosen to play Nani’s love interest, David Kawena, but due to past posts containing racial slurs on his social media reemerging, the part will now be taken by Kaipot Dudoit. As for the original voice of Nani, Tia Carrere, she will appear as a new character, Mrs. Kekoa, while Amy Hill will portray another new character, Tūtū.

What’s Lilo & Stitch about again?

As a die-hard film lover, I can’t help but reminisce about my favorite animated movie, “Lilo & Stitch.” This timeless tale follows the journey of Experiment 626, alias Stitch, as he escapes his creator, finds a home with a young girl in Hawaii, and develops an affection for Elvis Presley. The film beautifully portrayed the essence of ‘ohana’ and paved the way for Disney to understand the concept of toyetic. In the 2000s, Stitch merchandise was the driving force behind the American economy, with the little blue alien appearing everywhere from Cinderella’s castle to TV screens and gaining popularity in Japan. The upcoming adaptation will debut exclusively on Disney+. “Lilo & Stitch” is the latest Disney classic to receive the live-action makeover, a modern take on the old Disney Vault model. Instead of periodically rereleasing Disney films, why not completely reimagine them for a fresh, contemporary experience?
