In an anticipated decision, shareholders of Lionsgate voted decisively on Wednesday in support of splitting the company’s studio operations from its Starz subscription service.
The vote for various matters took place during Lionsgate’s annual shareholders meeting on April 23rd. Among these resolutions, the appointment of board members, executive pay, and other proxy proposals were all endorsed at this gathering. Lionsgate will release the official tally of votes in a SEC filing later today.
The transaction separating Lionsgate Studios and Starz is expected to close in early May.
For quite some time now, Lionsgate has been contemplating the separation of its studio operations from Starz. At one point, they anticipated wrapping up this deal as early as 2023’s start. Lionsgate obtained Starz, a premium cable network and streaming platform, for approximately $4.4 billion back in 2016.
According to the proposed arrangement, Jeff Hirsch will continue as CEO, and Starz will be identified by the ticker symbol STRZ in the stock market. On the other hand, Lionsgate Studios is already known by the symbol LION.
Starting from January, I’ve got some exciting news as a movie enthusiast! Lionsgate has extended its multiyear agreement with Starz. This means that Starz will continue to hold exclusive rights for first play on TV and Streaming Video on Demand (SVOD) for Lionsgate’s films. The best part? Under the new terms of this extension, you’ll get to see Lionsgate’s theatrical releases on Starz much sooner, closer to their initial theater debut!
