Lilo & Stitch and Mission Impossible Lead UK Box Office Surge in May

In May, Disney’s live-action version of “Lilo & Stitch” and Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” were the top earners at the U.K. and Ireland box office, leading to a significant surge in overall earnings. The total revenue reached an impressive £109.1 million ($147.7 million), which is 50% more than what was earned during the same period last year, as reported by Comscore.

In its first fortnight at cinemas, “The Reboot” earned $37.4 million, placing it as the highest-grossing film so far this year in that region. Remarkably, it has already outstripped the entire lifetime earnings of the 2002 animated original with a total of $17.7 million. Only “A Minecraft Movie” ($76.4 million) and “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” ($62.7 million) have grossed more in this territory since the beginning of 2025.

The newly released “Lilo & Stitch” has surpassed other recent Disney live-action adaptations, such as this year’s “Snow White” ($15.6 million), the 2019 version of “Dumbo” ($34.0 million), and last year’s “The Little Mermaid” ($37.1 million) in terms of box office earnings.

In the box office race for the month, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” earned the second spot with a total of $26 million, placing it as the fourth highest-grossing film of the year so far. This latest addition to the action series has also become the fourth-highest earning “Mission: Impossible” movie in the U.K., trailing behind “Dead Reckoning Part One” ($36 million), “Fallout” ($33 million), and “Rogue Nation” ($28.7 million). Additionally, this strong performance by Cruise marks his seventh-best box office success in the region.

In the latest box office results, Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” ranked third, earning a total of $21.7 million. This figure surpasses the lifetime earnings of “Eternals” ($20 million), “X-Men” ($20.2 million), and “X-Men: First Class” ($20.3 million). The team-up superhero movie is now just shy of matching “Captain America: Brave New World’s” earnings of $24.4 million, which it accumulated after its release in February.

In the horror movie series “Final Destination,” the film titled “Bloodlines” managed to secure the fourth position, earning a total of $13.4 million. This puts it behind “The Final Destination” which made $17.3 million and the original “Final Destination” with $14.1 million in terms of box office success within the series.

In its subsequent month, Ryan Coogler’s chilling vampire movie, “Sinners,” accumulated an additional $9.5 million, raising its earnings to a total of $21.2 million. This places the film as Michael B. Jordan’s second-most profitable project following “Black Panther” with a gross revenue of $68.5 million.

Last weekend, “Karate Kid: Legends” launched in seventh position with a box office take of $4.2 million, while “The Salt Path” made its debut as well, raking in $3.9 million. Currently, “The Salt Path” is the fifth highest-grossing British film of the year, slightly behind “Marching Powder” which has amassed $4.1 million.

Wes Anderson’s movie “The Phoenician Scheme” earned the ninth spot and $3.0 million, becoming his seventh-highest earning film, surpassing “Moonrise Kingdom” ($2.7 million). Lastly, the documentary featuring David Attenborough, titled “Ocean”, completed the top ten with $1.9 million in earnings.

The May results helped push the year-to-date box office 20% ahead of 2024 and 8% ahead of 2023.
