The updated version of Disney’s Lilo & Stitch has currently earned more than the initial film, with a possibility of becoming the first billion-dollar earner at the box office in 2025.
Among the 50 films with the highest box office earnings ever, three are live-action adaptations – Aladdin ($1.05 billion), Beauty and the Beast ($1.2 billion), and The Lion King ($1.6 billion) – have been particularly successful.
Though they sometimes fail to resonate with viewers (for instance, Snow White), Lilo and Stitch is shaping up to be one of Disney’s most profitable remakes. On the same release date, Barbenheimer and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning premiered in theaters, ensuring there was a movie for every taste during the Memorial Day weekend cinema lineup.
Moving forward, if Lilo and Stitch continue with strong ticket sales, they might surpass the one billion dollar mark within the next three weeks.
How much has Lilo and Stitch made so far?
Lilo and Stitch has grossed $341.7 billion worldwide, with $183 million coming from the US.
The earnings from the opening weekend are staggeringly high, almost reaching the sum earned by Thunderbolts ($355.5 million) in total, and far surpassing the box office collection of Snow White’s theatrical release ($205.1 million).
In addition, it earned more than the initial Lilo & Stitch movie, which grossed a grand total of approximately $273 million globally back in 2002.
In its initial release, the real-life adaptation of Lilo & Stitch earned a staggering $341.7 million worldwide, outperforming the box office success of the 2002 animated film from the very start.

Compared to Mission: Impossible, The Final Reckoning generated an impressive $204 million worldwide during its initial four-day run. This global earnings figure set a new franchise record for the U.S. and international markets, also making it the highest Memorial Day weekend gross in box office history.
Michael O’Leary, head of Cinema United, stated that this holiday season’s movie-watching events demonstrated yet again that attending the cinema is deeply ingrained in American traditions.
Regardless of statistics, it’s evident that cinemas function as both cultural and financial epicenters in cities and towns, irrespective of their size. These venues serve to bring together communities nationwide, sharing the shared excitement of watching a film on the large screen. This weekend marks the beginning of what promises to be an exceptional summer for movie enthusiasts worldwide.
Will Lilo and Stitch make $1 billion?
Unless there’s a significant decline in ticket sales during its second week, it’s likely that Lilo and Stitch will earn over $1 billion (with potential for even greater earnings).
Initially, nothing significant stands in its way until the How to Train Your Dragon remake premieres on June 13. That’s only about three weeks from now, leaving ample room for Lilo & Stitch to rule over cinemas with family reservations.
Furthermore, an appropriate benchmark for comparison is the 2019 version of The Lion King, which grossed approximately $446 million globally, a sum that exceeds Lilo & Stitch’s earnings by over $100 million. This remake also managed to join the billion-dollar club less than three weeks after its debut.
Given its previous success in earning over $1.6 billion, it’s almost certain that Lilo & Stitch will reach the milestone of $1 billion in earnings – it’s simply a question of when, not if.
Thirdly, though some fans have criticized the remake for omitting Captain Gantu and altering the ending of the original movie, it has generally received positive reviews. It earned an A from CinemaScore and a 93% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which suggests that its box office success in the near future is likely.
Fourthly and lastly, it’s worth noting that if you believe a Minecraft Movie will be the first film to gross $1 billion this year, you might need to reconsider your thoughts. As of now, its global earnings have reached approximately $940 million, but its domestic earnings during Memorial Day weekend were only $2.7 million. Essentially, Lilo & Stitch has captured more viewers than the Minecraft Movie.
