The sales agency, Lightdox, is now representing Monica Strømdahl’s film titled “Flophouse America”. This film will have its debut on Wednesday within the main competition section of the Copenhagen Documentary Festival (CPH:DOX).
The movie chronicles the life of 12-year-old Mikal, who resides in a humble hotel room alongside his parents and their feline companion, Smokey. This dwelling, often referred to as a flophouse, is characterized by disorder and excessive alcohol consumption. Yet, amidst the turmoil, there exists love and the aspiration for a brighter tomorrow.
For eight years, Strømdahl journeyed through the U.S., chronicling life within these hotels. During that time, she encountered Mikal, one of numerous children residing in such surroundings. This documentary, focusing on Mikal’s maturation, spans over three years, portraying the heartache of a fragmented childhood while also showcasing the affection and intricacies of his family.
Lightdox’s Anna Berthollet stated: “This exceptional film reveals the grim and emotionally devastating story of a young boy’s struggle for hope amidst the turmoil of poverty and addiction. Through Monica Strømdahl’s empathetic yet uncompromising perspective, we are granted an intimate look at life on society’s fringes, offering a profound understanding of hardships that are frequently disregarded.
Our dedication lies in advocating for this movie and spreading Mikal’s tale globally. This narrative, with its power to ignite crucial discussions on inequality and the daily struggles of vulnerable kids, is a story that deserves to be heard.
Siv Lamark serves as both the collaborative scriptwriter and editor for the production. The film is brought to life by Beathe Hofseth and Siri Natvik of Fri Film, with Eline van Wees of Basalt Film acting as a joint producer. David Sutherland, Joshua Seftel, and Eric Nicols at Smartypants are credited as executive producers.
