Lewis Pullman’s New Epic Historical Movie Officially Releases On Streaming This Week After Quiet Theatrical Run

Amanda Seyfried and Lewis Pullman’s Golden Globe-nominated movie, The Testament of Ann Lee, will soon be available to stream on Hulu after a limited theatrical release.

The historical drama, released in theaters in late 2025, didn’t perform well at the box office, earning less than $4 million. While it received nominations from some awards organizations, it didn’t gain much attention from the Academy Awards.

Viewers can now enjoy the film The Testament of Ann Lee from home when it becomes available on Hulu (and Hulu on Disney+) on Tuesday, March 31st. Disney+ announced the release with a new trailer.

The film The Testament of Ann Lee features Amanda Seyfried as Ann Lee, an 18th-century founder of the Shakers. Haunted by past experiences, Ann tries to build a perfect, utopian society, and her troubled history deeply influences her vision for it.

Bill Pullman, known for his role in Top Gun: Maverick, plays the character of Ann’s brother, William Lee, in the film. He stars alongside Thomasin McKenzie, Matthew Beard, Christopher Abbott, Viola Prettejohn, Stacy Martin, Scott Handy, David Cale, Jamie Bogyo, Maria Sand, Alexis Latham, Shannon Woodward, and Matti Boustedt.

Mona Fastvold, an Academy Award nominee for her screenwriting, directed The Testament of Ann Lee. She collaborated with her partner, Brady Corbet, on the film’s script, and the two of them also produced it alongside Andrew Morrison, Joshua Horsfield, Viktória Petrányi, Gregory Jankilevitsch, Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska, Lillian LaSalle, and Mark Lampert.

Music is central to the film, with several actors, including Seyfried and Pullman, performing songs. One song, “Clothed By the Sun,” composed by Daniel Blumberg, was nominated for several awards, including the Critics’ Choice Award, but ultimately lost to “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters.

Seyfried has sung in films before. She’s well known for her performances in the Mamma Mia! movies and Les Misérables.

Critics loved The Testament of Ann Lee, giving it an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. They described the film as unique, captivating, and almost mesmerizing, praising how the music went beyond simply telling a historical story. Many also highlighted Amanda Seyfried’s performance as Ann Lee, calling it the best work of her career so far.

I was so excited when awards season came around and “Clothed By the Sun” got nominated! And it wasn’t just the song – Amanda Seyfried was getting recognized everywhere with nominations at the Golden Globes, Astra Film Awards, Critics’ Choice, and even Gotham. But honestly, I was heartbroken when the Oscar nominations came out. It felt like The Testament of Ann Lee was completely overlooked – not one single person involved in the film got a nod, which was really disappointing.

You’ll be able to watch “The Testament of Ann Lee” on Hulu (including through Disney+’s Hulu access) starting Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
