I’m absolutely thrilled to share that my favorite actress, Letitia Wright, is making her directorial debut with the film “Highway to the Moon”! This groundbreaking premier will take place on May 31 at the South London Film Festival – a day I can’t wait for!
The brief movie, penned, steered, and produced by Wright, features Kenyah Sandy and Lamar Waves as the main actors. This coming-of-age fantasy drama delves into the lives of young Black men whose existence has been prematurely ended. In the story, Sandy portrays Micah, a character who, following an untimely demise, finds himself in a mystifying domain known as the Inbetween – a transitional realm between life and death. Accompanied by a band of other young men, he navigates this liminal space, discussing the challenges faced by Black boys in contemporary society. Their discussions serve to create a tale that emphasizes resilience, self-discovery, and ultimately encourages empathy, compassion, and self-worth among each other.
Inspired by the persistent issue of knife crime in London, Wright devised “Highway to the Moon” as a means to stimulate meaningful dialogue about identifying and addressing the underlying factors. She refers to this short movie as a heartfelt tribute to young Black men globally.
As a movie reviewer, I can say that “Highway to the Moon” was birthed from my personal journey and grief. This film serves as my artistic exploration of joy, love, and unity, aiming to present these young characters in a fresh light beyond stereotypes. Instead, we delve into their emotions, complexities, aspirations, dreams, setbacks, and fears, allowing them to recognize their worth and the significance of their lives.
As a passionate cinephile, I recognized the importance of launching my first film at a festival that champions up-and-coming talent within our local community. The South London Film Festival’s demographic perfectly aligns with the young audience I intended to impact through this movie, and I eagerly anticipate it striking a chord with them. This creative process has been instrumental in nurturing my growth as an artist, and I am excited about the opportunity to explore and share more compelling narratives that move me and resonate with viewers.
The short film was commissioned through WeTransfer’s arts platform, WePresent.
Holly Fraser, Vice President of Content at WeTransfer, stated, “The heart of WePresent’s mission as a platform has always been to tell significant stories and collaborate with artists who utilize creativity for progress. Letitia embodies this spirit, and through the creation of ‘Highway to the Moon’, we’ve witnessed her passion, attention to detail, and commitment at every stage. We look forward to seeing where ‘Highway to the Moon’ travels next, and we hope that it sparks meaningful discussions among its viewers in the future.
Fraser, alongside Alex Mattinson and Damian Bradfield from WeTransfer, serves as an executive producer for the short film titled “Highway to the Moon.” This project’s social impact campaign is backed by Common Pictures and managed by Together Films.
