As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for international cinema, I must say that the latest updates from Leone Film Group have me positively giddy. With their finger on the pulse of top-notch indie films and an impressive roster of collaborations with big names like Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Guy Ritchie, they continue to carve out a niche in the ever-changing movie market.
Despite significant shifts in the global cinema distribution landscape, Leone Film Group remains a prominent Italian distributor, specializing in high-quality independent films produced in English. Their diverse catalog encompasses various film genres, featuring works by esteemed directors like Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.
However, unlike in the past when Leone Film Group primarily sourced content from U.S. independent studios like Lionsgate and Amblin Entertainment (Spielberg), their current approach is to obtain films from whoever has quality productions. This encompasses a variety of titles such as the recent success “Civil War” starring Kirsten Dunst, the upcoming action sequel “John Wick 4” featuring Keanu Reeves, and the soon-to-be-released “Dumb Money.”
In May, Polimanti made a series of purchases at Cannes, acquiring three films from Black Bear Entertainment. Among them is Guy Ritchie’s upcoming film titled “Wife and Dog,” which takes place in the realm of British aristocracy, marking the fifth movie of Ritchie’s to be distributed in Italy through Leone. Additionally, LFG picked up two other titles from Black Bear Entertainment: the action-thriller “Mutiny,” starring Jason Statham, and the intriguing thriller “I Want Your Sex,” featuring Olivia Wilde as its lead actress.
Notable films in LFG’s upcoming roster include:
“Polimanti states that our platform caters to a variety of films, including Pablo Larrain’s ‘Spencer,’ as well as action-packed titles like ‘John Wick.’ He also mentions that the Lionsgate series starring Keanu Reeves, which we had the privilege to executive produce for ‘John Wick 2,’ has been a significant financial success in Italy.”
“Helen Lee-Kim, president of Lionsgate’s motion picture group’s international division, expresses excitement as she observes them extending their remarkable family heritage,” states her commentary.
Despite a thriving expansion on the LFG production front, Polimanti highlights that within the overall business scope, distribution continues to contribute nearly half of the group’s earnings, totalling approximately €86,6 million or $94.5 million in 2023.
In April, the collaboration between Leone, 01 Distribuzione from RAI Cinema, and A24 resulted in the successful theatrical release of “Civil War” in Italy. This was LFG’s first partnership with A24, and it was another addition to their long list of titles they have jointly distributed through RAI Cinema’s 01 Distribution. The film distribution arm of Italian state broadcaster RAI and LFG have been working together on co-releases for over a decade, making it seem as if they operate as one team according to Polimanti.
RAI Cinema chief Paolo Del Brocco call their rapport “profitable and productive.”
Among the forthcoming Italian productions, I’m particularly excited about “Here Now,” directed by Gabriele Muccino, which features Elena Kampouris (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3”) as Sophie, a young Californian who encounters an intriguing boy during her final day in Sicily and ends up sharing an unforgettable night with him. Another title to watch out for is Paolo Genovese’s comedy “Follemente,” also under the production of Lotus. I can hardly wait!
Lastly, getting back to its origins, LFG plans to unveil the director’s cut of Sergio Leone’s “Once Upon a Time in America” in a fresh 4K format soon.
“As I bring back this classic movie for a modern audience, 40 years after it first hit screens, I feel an immense sense of pride swelling within me,” I express, Andrea Leone, president and CEO of Leone Film Group. “I’m optimistic that this re-release will resonate deeply with fresh viewers and stir the same emotions in those who have cherished it before.”
