Lego Could Make A Big Change To Future Video Games

As per the statements made by Niels Christiansen, the current CEO of The Lego Group, there are plans for the company to potentially start creating video games within their own facilities. This was revealed during a recent interview where he mentioned they are gearing up to produce these games on their own.

Under the umbrella of the Lego brand, we’re capable of catering to the diverse experiences of children of all age groups, whether they are digital or physical. Additionally, creating our own games development in-house is a growing focus for us, as mentioned during an interview with the Financial Times.

A significant number of current Lego video games are developed by external studios under a licensing agreement. For instance, Lego collaborates with TT Games, a studio based in the UK, to create the well-known Lego games that are themed around popular franchises such as Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Lego collaborates with Epic Games on the Lego Fortnite game within the Fortnite gaming environment. Furthermore, Lego has teamed up with 2K for the creation of a racing game titled Lego 2K Drive, slated for release in 2023. As reported by VGC, this partnership marks the start of a series of sports games that will emerge from this agreement.

According to journalist Jason Schreier, TT Games is currently creating a new Lego game that might be launched towards the end of 2025 or in 2026. Video Game Chronicle hinted at a possible upcoming Lego Harry Potter title, which could adopt a similar layout as Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and span the entire Harry Potter series. In 2024, the Lego Harry Potter Collection was released, featuring both Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 and Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 combined. Moving forward, Warner Bros. Games is planning to undergo significant modifications and concentrate on a limited number of key franchises, with Harry Potter being one of them.

2024 saw the launch of a fresh addition to the Lego game collection – Lego Horizon Adventures. This game was modeled after the storylines from Sony’s Horizon series, and it was jointly produced by Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo.

Based on Christiansen’s brief statement hinting at possible internal game development, it remains unclear as to why such a shift might occur, when it may take place, or how it would impact LEGO’s existing collaborations with external game studios.
