'Legit Genius' John Cena Shocked His Jackpot Director And Co-Star

As a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for quirky, action-packed films, I must say that Jackpot on Prime Video is a delightful surprise! Being a fan of both Paul Feig and John Cena‘s work, I was eager to see their collaboration, but the unexpected layers they’ve added to their characters in this film have left me thoroughly impressed.

In the year 2030, the nearly bankrupt state of California introduces a massive lottery called Jackpot by Prime Video. However, there’s a twist: the winner must be eliminated before sunset to lawfully claim their astronomical winnings. This intriguing film is directed by Paul Feig and features Awkafina as Katie, a former child star who unwittingly wins the lottery, and John Cena as Noel, a freelance bodyguard tasked with protecting lottery winners.

In conversation with TopMob, Feig and Awkafina shared their surprise when collaborating with Cena for the first time, as they weren’t sure what to anticipate. In fact, Feig went so far as to call the ex-WWE Champion a true genius.

Feig commented, “I wouldn’t have guessed he had that side,” referring to his co-star. “During breaks, he’d casually mention learning to play jazz piano in his trailer. Incredible, right? He’s an intelligent individual and I admire him greatly.”

In response to being queried about their working relationship, Akwafina concurred, saying, “Absolutely. To put it simply, John is incredibly professional. He always arrives on set, and at first glance, one might assume he’s quite serious. But then you discover he has a great sense of humor.”

The actress continued by mentioning that Cena caught her off guard by sharing a common interest in literature. “We often discussed our preferred books and the books he was currently reading, as he reads an impressive amount. And I find it delightful learning more about him.”

Director Feig is praised by Cena for masterfully capturing the chemistry between Noel and Katie, skillfully structuring the comedy, and coming equipped with backup jokes to ensure the intended impact when his original jokes might not have landed as desired.

As a seasoned comedy writer with years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that working with Paul is an absolute joy. His ability to come up with a plethora of alternative jokes is truly astounding. The sheer volume of material he generates is so impressive that it warrants an entire blooper reel, and I always encourage audiences to stay till the end of the credits because his humor extends even into the credit sequence.

Jackpot is available to stream on Prime Video.
