Legendary Sci-Fi Game Is Getting a Survival Spin-Off. One Detail Led Many Gamers to Give Up on EVE Frontier

As a long-time devotee of EVE Online, a space opera that has been my cosmic home for years, I must admit to experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions upon hearing about EVE Frontier. On one hand, the idea of exploring a lawless region of space, battling AI drones, and rebuilding civilization sounds thrilling – like a blend of Elite Dangerous and No Man’s Sky with a dash of Minecraft.

Studio CCP has announced EVE Frontier, a survival spin-off of the popular space MMO EVE Online.

  1. The player takes on the role of a pilot who awakens from a long sleep in a chaotic region of space. In this place, only ruins remain of the former civilization, armies of AI-controlled drones hunt down any survivors, and the region is full of black holes and other dangerous anomalies.
  2. We will have complete control over our ship in EVE Frontier, resembling space shooters rather than MMOs. In addition to the survival gameplay and combat, key roles will be played by elements such as trading, gathering resources, unit upgrades, and even programming.
  3. It will take place on one server, where all players will play at the same time. Their common goal is to rebuild civilization. Construction will be mostly automated, but it will be carried out using a simple programming system that gives users a lot of freedom to shape space structures.
  4. The game is coming to PC. For now, the developers aren’t ready to announce the planned release date.

Fans are furious

Although it might seem exciting, the response from EVE Online enthusiasts towards this announcement has been quite negative. The reason stems from the new business model. Instead of traditional gameplay currency, players will now trade real money since the entire virtual economy within the game will be linked to Ethereum cryptocurrency. To elaborate further, the game mechanics are set to utilize blockchain technology, enabling the establishment of virtual shops where other gamers can purchase items using this digital system.

Areas where enthusiasts of the game, EVE Online, congregate, like Reddit and official forums, have been inundated with displeased remarks. Gamers are voicing their dissatisfaction loudly, expressing that they don’t want any blockchain-related complications. They view the prospect of EVE Frontier as unfortunate and worry it could draw attention away from enhancing the current game, EVE Online.
