Legendary Gundam Artist Joins Viral Art Trend Inspired by an Anime Masterpiece

A popular art trend inspired by the anime Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End recently took off online. It’s become so widespread that even professional anime designers are participating, creating some amazing artwork.

A renowned artist has joined the excitement surrounding the anime Frieren. Tsukasa Kotobuki, known as @t_kotobuki on X (formerly Twitter), recently shared his own artwork inspired by the popular series, just before the second season premieres in January.

Gundam Legend Tsukasa Kotobuki Tackles Viral Frieren Art Challenge

Kotobuki is well-known for designing characters in several Gundam anime series, including Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom. They’ve also illustrated multiple Gundam manga and served as the character designer for Saber Marionette J.

I noticed a fun trend started on Reddit: artists began trying to draw Frieren, the elf mage from the anime, from the hardest possible angle – looking up at her from below. It quickly gained popularity, and soon I saw that Kotobuki, the artist behind the series, had spotted it on X (formerly Twitter) too.

I was so excited to follow Kotobuki’s progress online! He shared updates on November 18th, showing everything he was doing for this challenge, right up until it was finished. Finally, he posted this adorable animated GIF of Frieren tilting her head. He admitted it was a really quick sketch – a little shaky, he said – but it moved, and you could totally tell who it was! He posted that in Japanese, of course, but the translation is perfect.
