“Elle,” the “Legally Blonde” prequel series, has found Elle’s mom.
Actress June Diane Raphael has signed up for the Amazon Prime Video project, taking on the role of Eva. She will be working alongside Lexi Minetree, who was earlier announced as Elle. The series tells the story of a younger version of Elle Woods, portrayed by Reese Witherspoon in the two “Legally Blonde” movies, navigating her way through high school.
Laura Kittrell (‘High School’, ‘Insecure’) and Caroline Dries jointly oversee the production of ‘Elle’. Kittrell serves as an executive producer and co-showrunner, while Witherspoon is involved as an executive producer through her Hello Sunshine production company. Lauren Neustadter and Marc Platt are also executive producers. Directing the first two episodes is Jason Moore. ‘Elle’ is a joint production between Hello Sunshine and Amazon MGM Studios.
The initial “Legally Blonde” movie from 2001 was a big hit at the box office, earning more than $140 million worldwide. The follow-up, titled “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde,” premiered in 2003. A third film, produced by Witherspoon but not starring her, was released as a direct-to-video production in 2009. A stage musical inspired by the first film made its debut on Broadway in 2007, garnering several Tony and Drama Desk nominations.
Raphael is widely recognized for portraying Brianna Hanson over seven seasons of “Grace and Frankie” and Julie Gristlewhite on “Burning Love.” Her television roles also span shows like “New Girl,” “Big Mouth,” “Based on a True Story,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Frasier,” “Black Monday,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Parks and Recreation.” In films, she has acted in titles such as “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “Year One,” “Blockers” and “Long Shot.” Upcoming, she can be seen in Zach Cregger’s next film, “Weapons,” and is executive producing and starring in the pilot “DINKS” along with her husband Paul Scheer for Amazon, MGM and Lionsgate.
