‘Leaving Neverland’ Sequel ‘Surviving Michael Jackson’ Set for March

The Michael Jackson documentary “Leaving Neverland” is officially getting a sequel.

On March 18th, I can confirm that a one-hour follow-up documentary titled “Surviving Michael Jackson” will air on Channel 4 in the U.K. This sequel will revisit the stories of Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who have alleged that Michael Jackson abused them as minors. Throughout his lifetime, Jackson denied these accusations, and his estate still maintains his innocence.

HBO, the company responsible for creating the two-part documentary in 2019 titled “Leaving Neverland”, will not be part of its sequel. In 2020, HBO faced a lawsuit by the Jackson estate, who claimed that the documentary breached a 1992 non-disparagement clause from a concert film during Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous” tour. The estate sued HBO for $100 million.

HBO made a two-part documentary called “Leaving Neverland” in 2019, but they won’t be involved in its sequel. In 2020, the Jackson estate sued HBO for $100 million because they claimed that the documentary broke an agreement from a concert film made in 1992. This agreement was meant to prevent negative comments about Michael Jackson.

Under the guidance of director Dan Reed, “Leaving Neverland 2” delves into the personal repercussions experienced by Robson and Safechuck following their public allegations against Michael Jackson. These two individuals persist in their quest for justice amidst pushback from his massive worldwide fanbase. The documentary boasts “unprecedented access to court proceedings,” aiming to reveal the lengths to which the Jackson estate has gone to impede James and Wade from receiving a fair trial.

In this new version, I tried to make it more conversational while still preserving the original structure and meaning.

Throughout my fandom years, I’ve often grappled with the troubling reports about Jackson being accused of child sexual abuse multiple times during his career. These serious allegations culminated in a high-profile trial in 2005. Despite these accusations, he maintained his innocence and was ultimately acquitted on all charges.

In a nutshell, “Leaving Neverland 2” is created by Reed through his company Amos Pictures, with Marguerite Gaudin serving as producer. Peter Haddon and Ben Hills are the editors, while Iris Maor oversees production. Adam Vandermark is the commissioner for Channel 4. Sphere Abacus takes care of international distribution.

2019’s original documentary movie garnered the Emmy Award for outstanding documentary or nonfiction special and also received the British Academy Television (BAFTA) TV award for the best factual series.
