As a devoted fan, I’m excitedly anticipating that Masahiro Sakurari himself is rumored to be working on a fresh installment of the iconic Super Smash Bros series for Nintendo! After he completes his heartfelt endeavor with Kirby Air Rider, I can hardly wait to see what he has in store for us next.
After releasing Sora as the last downloadable character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, its creator, Sakurai, decided to take a break from game development and focus more on his cherished YouTube channel instead.
As a gaming enthusiast, I couldn’t contain my excitement when the legendary game developer, who had taken a step back from active development, announced his return with a fresh project – none other than the thrilling Kirby Air Rider!
As reported by YouTube personality Reece ‘Kiwi Talkz’ Reilly, who has spoken with numerous game developers, Masahiro Sakurai is currently working on another Smash game following Kirby Air Ride, which he may have utilized as leverage in negotiations with Nintendo.
New Super Smash Bros game on Switch 2 reportedly planned
As stated by Kiwi Talkz, following numerous years of work on Super Smash Bros series, Sakurai expressed a desire to develop a follow-up to Kirby Air Ride for the GameCube, possibly due to burnout.
Kiwi Talkz mentioned that, in a negotiation strategy, he suggested allowing another ‘Smash’ only if Kirby Air Riders was done first,” said Kiwi Talkz. “Currently, Sakurai is indispensable for the development of Smash Bros. All information related to the negotiations between Sakurai and Nintendo comes from this source.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel thrilled about this game that clearly represents Sakurai’s heart and soul. After years of tirelessly working on the Smash Bros series since 2012, he proposed an intriguing deal: he would continue his work on Smash if given the chance to create Kirby Air Ride first, as a sort of refresher.
In the current scenario, Nintendo finds itself in a challenging position with the Smash Bros franchise, as there’s simply no one quite like Sakurai who can fill his shoes at the moment.

Currently, this YouTuber doubts if a fresh Smash game is being developed right now, as they think the production won’t start until after Kirby Air Riders, a project dear to Sakurai, is completed.
It’s plausible that Bandai Namco might be starting the early stages of development, but it seems more unlikely. Sakurai plays a crucial role in the planning process, particularly when it comes to third-party negotiations. His influence and standing within the gaming industry are immense and should not be undervalued.
Significantly, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate welcomed numerous characters from other games into the fray, including Steve (Minecraft), Kazuya (Tekken), Sora, and Sephiroth (Final Fantasy 7), Joker (Persona), among many others.
There’s yet to be clarity on the specific appearance of the upcoming Smash game, nor is it certain whether it will be an enhanced edition of Ultimate or a full-fledged sequel instead.
