Nintendo recently revealed a small preview of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, seemingly unintentionally. Two short, unlisted commercials for the upcoming Switch 2 were discovered on Nintendo of America’s YouTube channel, and one of them features a quick look at a new boss battle. Viewers who want to avoid spoilers should probably skip it.
Two videos, both titled “Power Up Your Holidays” and uploaded on October 15th, have surfaced. The first revisits the plant-based boss Carvex. However, the second video is more interesting – it highlights that the Switch 2 version will support mouse controls and run at 120 frames per second, and it also reveals a new, spherical boss character named Xelios.
Xelios is only visible for a short time, but it looks like it’s made of moving, hexagonal plates. It has a green sac and a pink core in the middle. You’ll likely need to shoot that pink core when it’s exposed during the fight.
Since we only have a few details about Metroid Prime 4’s story, it’s hard to draw firm conclusions. However, the introduction of the character Xelios does suggest a couple of things about where the game might be headed.
Several key enemies, like Aberax (shown during the Nintendo Treehouse presentation), Carvex, Xelios, and the main villain Sylux, all share the letter ‘X’ in their names. This is a noticeable pattern, similar to how the members of Organization XIII in Kingdom Hearts were named. However, this is just a naming convention and doesn’t suggest any connection to the Kingdom Hearts series.
The video of the Aberax battle clearly shows it being infected by a Metroid before attacking Samus. This infection gives Aberax new powers and noticeable features – green sacs and pink nuclei – that are characteristic of Metroids. This raises the possibility that other bosses we’ve seen are also connected to Metroids in some way. Ultimately, it seems Metroid Prime 4 is really focusing on the Metroid elements of the game.
Although the videos haven’t been publicly released yet, they suggest Nintendo is preparing to promote the Switch 2 during the holiday season. The new Metroid Prime 4: Beyond game is scheduled to launch on December 4th, and Metroid fans can also enjoy a visual retrospective book showcasing the first three Metroid Prime games, which will be available this month.
