The executive team at North America’s premier documentary festival, Hot Docs, has chosen Diana Sanchez for the role of organizational leader. The upcoming 32nd edition of Hot Docs will run from April 24 to May 4, showing in movie theaters all over Toronto.
Sanchez is responsible for guiding the strategic planning and operational control of the festival, the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, and their ongoing events and initiatives throughout the year.
Sanchez, who starts March 31, succeeds interim executive director Janice Dawe.
Sanchez held the position of Senior Director for both Film and International Programming at the Toronto Film Festival, and has also been employed at the Miami Film Festival, Rotterdam Film Festival, as well as the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival. Additionally, she co-founded the International Film Festival of Panama.
Sanchez, who earned her MA in Film Studies from the University of Toronto and has delivered numerous lectures, recently spearheaded the inaugural season of the ‘Pop-Up’ Cinematheque at the university. This involved establishing a collaboration between the Media Commons Archives and the Cinema Studies Institute to highlight the archives’ collection and make it accessible for campus events, allowing students and audiences to engage with the content.
Diana’s appointment as board chair at Hot Docs fills us with optimism, as we believe her leadership will mark a thrilling new chapter for our organization. She embodies a deep-rooted passion, extensive industry experience, and an unwavering dedication to the ability of film to bridge gaps between people and catalyze positive change.
He stated: “We eagerly anticipate her significant input as we redefine Hot Docs’ future, bolster our festival and cinema, and continue to advocate for filmmakers in Canada and internationally. Her perspective will aid us in amplifying a variety of voices, linking audiences with essential narratives, and fostering enlightening discussions that foster empathy and comprehension.
Sanchez expressed: “Tale-spinning can help us rediscover, reinvent, and offer new viewpoints about our surroundings. Keeping this thought in mind, Hot Docs is embarking on an exhilarating new phase—one of expansion, change, and a revitalized outlook. As documentary films keep advancing, I’m thrilled to support daring creators, welcome innovative concepts, and nurture significant relationships—not just locally but globally within the documentary community. I am eagerly anticipating working with the gifted Hot Docs team to create a vibrant and inclusive future for storytelling in documentaries.
