"Layoffs” at Bandai Namco. That’s the Result of Deleting Several Games, Including Titles With Characters From Naruto and One Piece

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say that it’s disheartening to hear about the ongoing layoffs at Bandai Namco Studios. Having grown up with their iconic games like Tekken, Naruto, and One Piece, I’ve shared countless hours of joy with their creations.

Bandai Namco appears to be thriving, given their recent successes such as Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree which have raked in impressive sales figures. Yet surprisingly, these victories didn’t shield the company from having to implement layoffs.

Approximately 100 out of the 1,300 workers at Bandai Namco Studios’ subsidiary have chosen to leave since April, with more anticipated departures in the upcoming months. However, it’s important to note that the company is reportedly planning to move employees to what are referred to as “layoff rooms”.

It appears that these locations are where individuals not currently assigned to projects are sent, as a tactic to encourage them to resign voluntarily. Many of them are using this time to search for a new job opportunity. According to anonymous sources, around 200 people have been relocated to such areas since April. Notably, a representative from Bandai Namco has spoken out about the issue.

Our choice to halt game development stems from a thorough evaluation of our current circumstances. As new projects become available, some team members may need to wait before being reassigned, but we remain busy with tasks as they come in. It’s important to clarify that there is no department within Bandai Namco Studios similar to the “oidashi beya” [the Japanese term for the place – ed. note], whose purpose would be to coerce people into leaving on a voluntary basis.

The agency explained that the necessity to reduce expenses was behind the decision for job reductions, and this move included scrapping various projects, including the expensive Blue Protocol and mobile game Tales of the Rays. Additionally, it’s said that games yet-to-be-announced based on the anime series Naruto and One Piece, along with a project ordered by Nintendo, were put on hold as well.
