For over three decades, the Law & Order series has been capturing the streets of New York City on film, and with such a rich history, it’s likely that many anecdotes could be shared by the actors who have been part of these iconic productions. As one of the longest-serving cast members in the L&O universe, Christopher Meloni has certainly gathered some interesting tales from his time filming the drama on location and interacting with fans. However, there are instances where a scene can be disrupted due to intrusions, as Meloni humorously shares some colorful language used by spectators who have shouted expletives at him during filming.
Since 1999, Christopher Meloni has played Detective Elliot Stabler on Law & Order: SVU, leaving in 2012 but returning to reprise the role for a spinoff, Organized Crime, airing currently on the 2025 TV schedule. Given his extensive filming history in New York City, it’s no wonder he’s had numerous encounters with fans throughout the years. During an appearance on BuzzFeed’s Puppy Interview segment, Meloni was asked to share some of the craziest or most memorable experiences he’s had while filming in NYC, and they certainly sound extraordinary.
Typically, when you’re out on the streets, trying to stay in character and focus on the scene, a car might pass by and someone might shout something like “Ice-T, get that guy!” or “Stabler, go after them!” In such situations, you’d respond with something like “Alright, well, that really messed up the take” or “Stabler, my man! Knock ’em out!” You’d then say, “Alright, I will! Thanks for ruining the take.
As someone who deeply appreciates Dick Wolf’s enduring franchise, I can only imagine that veteran cast and crew members are accustomed to the cheers and shouts from enthusiastic fans. Yet, the occasional disruption during a take doesn’t make it any less frustrating, if not more so because such outbursts highlight the undeniable appeal of this long-running series. Despite the adoration, I can’t help but wish for a modicum of respect from fans, understanding that filming can already be a challenging and stressful endeavor.
If you’re in search of captivating tales from the Law & Order universe, Peacock TV is definitely worth checking out. The monthly subscription starts at an affordable $7.99, but if you prefer a commercial-free experience and the ability to download titles for offline viewing, you can opt for the premium tier at $79.99 annually. Take advantage of this offer now!
Filming Law & Order in public areas of New York City can present both challenges and rewards. For instance, last year during an SVU shoot, Mariska Hargitay was mistaken for a police officer by a young girl who was lost. The filming paused temporarily while Hargitay assisted the child in finding her mother, successfully reuniting them. This demonstrates that while she portrays Captain Olivia Benson on TV, in real life, one could argue, Hargitay is indeed a hero as well.

NBC’s “Law & Order” hasn’t been renewed for Season 25 as of yet, but one star shared his optimism about reaching this milestone with us.
Speaking of Meloni’s “Organized Crime”, the much-anticipated fifth season debuted a month ago. Unfortunately, Ainsley Seiger’s character Jet bid a sad farewell in this season. Notably, both Mariska Hargitay and Peter Scanavino have made appearances on the show, contributing to the expanding interconnectedness of its universe.
It seems likely that the actors and crew of the Law & Order series will still encounter fan reactions during public filming, but they are likely to manage these encounters skillfully due to their professionalism. Despite this, I’m curious to hear stories from other cast members who have worked on the franchise about their experiences.
