2025 TV season has been particularly thrilling for enthusiasts of the Law & Order series, and the anticipation surrounding the crossover of the original with SVU remains palpable. However, NBC has yet to confirm if its remaining two Law & Order shows will air in the fall, leaving fans on tenterhooks for renewal updates. In a recent conversation with Hugh Dancy, who portrays ADA Nolan Price, we discussed his character’s dynamic opposite Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson. Additionally, he shared his thoughts on the series potentially reaching the 25-season milestone.
This spring, NBC hasn’t canceled many shows yet, but last year at this time, Law & Order, SVU, and all three One Chicago series in the Dick Wolf TV universe were already renewed for the 2024-2025 season. This isn’t necessarily a negative indication for the 2025-2026 season, as SVU has reportedly secured a new showrunner for Season 27. (You can stream the crossover with a Peacock subscription now.)
Despite the fact that “Law & Order” is nearly at its 25th season, I couldn’t help but inquire from the veteran of “Hannibal”, what his thoughts are on achieving the milestone that “SVU” celebrated with much fanfare a few years back? Dancy responded:
It would be truly fantastic for the series to receive such recognition, as I believe it’s long overdue. The break in the storyline and the length of time the show has covered is astounding, making this achievement even more remarkable. On a personal note, being part of a successful and consistently running show is intriguing.
Although SVU has achieved both the 500-episode and 25-season milestones, Law & Order dates back much further than its spinoff. The original series debuted as early as 1990, while the first episode of SVU didn’t air until 1999. Hugh Dancy’s show trails behind in terms of total seasons due to what he called “the break in the middle,” referring to the period between Law & Order’s initial cancellation in 2010 and its revival’s premiere in 2022.
Since Dancy joined the main cast when the series was rebooted, there’s no one more suitable to affirm that the show is running smoothly upon its comeback. He went on to say:
The machine is remarkably efficient and powerful, but we’re constantly seeking ways to personalize it and ensure its continued operation up to 2025. There are no untouchables in our approach; everything is open for improvement. Our ultimate goal is to maintain the show’s popularity while continuously reinventing it to keep audiences engaged.
Occasionally, procedural shows need to introduce some variety to keep things interesting, and it seems many viewers share Hugh Dancy’s optimism that the Law & Order crew can continue to adhere to their format while also keeping it fresh. To some extent, Season 24 has managed this, as evidenced by Reid Scott (Detective Vincent Riley) commending the sometimes “unsatisfying” conclusions. Despite this, the series still manages to draw from current events for its dramatic content every so often.
Hey fellow movie enthusiast! Here’s a great deal I stumbled upon – Peacock TV! For just $7.99 a month or $79.99 a year, you can catch up on exclusive shows like new episodes of Law & Order the very next day, along with SVU and Organized Crime. If you’re willing to splurge a bit more, go for Peacock Premium at an additional cost. It offers ad-free streaming and the convenience to download titles for offline viewing later. Don’t miss out on this fantastic offer!
Wondering when we might find out if Law & Order will return in the fall? At this point, all we can do is stay patient and keep our fingers crossed. The renewal for Season 24 happened over a year ago, and Hugh Dancy has confirmed that filming for this season has been completed already. There are still some episodes left to air before the finale, among them an intriguing one featuring thirteen bodies discovered. Take a look at the promo here:
Don’t forget to catch NBC this Thursday, May 1st at 8 p.m. Eastern Time for the “Sins of the Father” episode of Law & Order. Given the title, I’m curious if they might delve into Price’s storyline concerning his brother after their father’s demise. Regardless, the segment will be succeeded by Season 26 of Law & Order: SVU at 9 p.m. Eastern Time.
Fans have been eagerly waiting, and finally, the much-anticipated debut of “Law & Order: Organized Crime” is here! While Christopher Meloni’s series won’t be airing after SVU on NBC like before, it will still give fans their beloved “Law & Order Thursdays” – just in a slightly different way. Instead, the episodes will stream on Peacock every Thursday night.
