Law & Order: Organized Crime’s New Recruit Fails to Impress After Jet’s Exit

The replacement for Ainsley Seiger’s character, Jet, in episode 4 of season 5 of “Law & Order: Organized Crime” titled “Promesse Infrantre,” is not looking promising at the moment. Jet has been a key member of the Organized Crime Unit since its first episode. Regrettably, she is no longer part of the cast for season 5. Initially, she was considering accepting a job offer from the FBI to stay with the unit, but her superior, Bell, advised against it as he felt it might hinder Jet’s growth and potential.

As a seasoned movie critic, I found myself immersed in the latest episode of “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” titled “Promesse Infrantre.” Previously, Vargas (Tate Ellington), who had been a consultant for the team since season 4, stepped into a more substantial role following Jet’s departure. This time around, we see him in action as the full-time computer expert, utilizing his digital prowess to aid the squad. The focus of this week’s investigation revolves around Stabler and his family being targeted in a drive-by shooting linked to Stabler’s ongoing probe into the Spezzano family’s organized crime connections. Vargas’s expertise plays a pivotal role in tracking down the motorcyclists responsible for the attack, adding a fresh dynamic to the team and keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.

Stabler Indicates It Before Jet Leaves

In the fifth season, episode 3 of “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” Stabler (Christopher Meloni) orchestrates Vargas’ promotion. As he bids farewell to Jet, he says, “I can’t believe I’m leaving you with Vargas.” This casual goodbye fits Stabler’s character well, and hints at the audience that Vargas might be taking over Jet’s position in the Organized Crime Unit. Regrettably, so far, it appears that Stabler’s assessment of Vargas as an unsatisfactory replacement seems to hold true.

In the initial assignment, Vargas helps identify those responsible for a drive-by shooting which potentially ended Stabler’s grandchild’s life before birth. This task brings forth an unexpected side of Vargas, as he demonstrates expertise in motorcycles – a trait that seems to contradict his typically reserved character. While this episode highlights an unanticipated aspect of Vargas, it also emphasizes that, despite spending a year with the team, they still don’t know him very well.

Why Vargas’ Role As Jet’s Replacement Isn’t Reassuring

He Doesn’t Gel As Well With The Rest Of The Team

In essence, Vargas might still be adapting to his new position, but he hasn’t yet shown the same connection with the team that Jet did. Jet’s presence brought an engaging mix of humor and intrigue to her scenes. She wasn’t just a tech whiz; she struggled with intimacy, had complex romantic relationships, and shared a deep bond with Stabler. Furthermore, she challenged stereotypes about women in STEM fields by excelling in both fieldwork and computer work as a police officer.

On the flip side, Vargas appears to be the typical computer whiz who finds it challenging to navigate social situations. The scene where he rides a motorcycle seems to attempt to make him more relatable, but unfortunately, it doesn’t quite work because he hasn’t formed any genuine bonds with the team yet. This could be less troublesome if he were a fresh character, but given that he has worked alongside everyone for a year, one might expect a stronger connection between them. The fact that this isn’t apparent suggests that he may never truly become part of the team.

How Can Law & Order: Organized Crime Turn Vargas Into Jet’s Worthy Replacement

His Personality Needs To Be Fleshed Out

A significant challenge with Vargas is that his character lacks depth, failing to leave a lasting impression or spark curiosity. If the fifth season of Law & Order: Organized Crime addresses this issue, Vargas could prove to be an adequate successor for Jet. One strategy could involve incorporating more of the humor reminiscent of Vargas when he was initially introduced. For instance, one of the most hilarious scenes in the show’s history featured Vargas attempting to fit the muscular Randall into his compact car after Randall spent a night in jail.

To enrich the character development of Vargas on Law & Order: Organized Crime, it would be beneficial to introduce at least one teammate who becomes a friend. This friendship would provide opportunities for Vargas to exhibit a more emotional side, contrasting his current tough exterior. Revealing personal struggles such as a yearning to belong or trust issues would make Vargas a multi-dimensional character, differentiating him beyond just knowing he enjoys motorcycles. Consequently, incorporating some vulnerable moments into the series would aid in fleshing out Vargas’ character and encourage audience investment.
