It turns out that Lawrence Fishburne didn’t get a chance to watch Will Smith portray Neo in the “Matrix”-inspired music video for his single “Beautiful Scars,” featuring rapper Big Sean. Interestingly, Fishburne wasn’t even informed about the existence of this video.
Really? I haven’t come across it yet,” Fishburne said to EbMaster during the premiere of “The Amateur” on Wednesday evening in New York City. “Could you tell me its name?
In the “Beautiful Scars” music video, Will Smith assumes the character of Neo, a role he declined when the Wachowskis initially offered it to him for their 1999 film, “The Matrix.” It was Keanu Reeves who eventually took on the iconic role. In the video, Big Sean takes over as Morpheus, a part previously acted by Laurence Fishburne. When asked about the idea behind the music video, Fishburne responded casually, “I think that’s neat.
Laurence Fishburne, known for his iconic portrayal of Morpheus in the initial “Matrix” trilogy, was absent from 2021’s “The Matrix Resurrections,” where Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss returned. Instead, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stepped into the role of Morpheus. Recently, on “The View,” Sarah Haines queried if Fishburne might rejoin the “Matrix” series.
According to Fishburne, whether he takes part in a project hinges on various factors such as who’s involved, the quality of the script, and if an offer is made. He proposed his services for the fourth ‘Matrix’ film, but it seemed they weren’t receptive to the idea.
Well, I did express my willingness to help, but it seems that wasn’t taken up. That’s the reality of the situation. So, let’s wait and see what happens next.
Even though Laurence Fishburne didn’t reprise his role as Morpheus in “The Matrix Resurrections”, he will have an opportunity to display his fighting abilities yet again in the upcoming spy thriller “The Amateur”. This film also features Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan, and Jon Bernthal.
In an interview with EbMaster, Fishburne shared that he was thrilled about his substantial action scene in the film. He explained that they had to meticulously learn the choreography for the fight, involving much preparation such as stretching and warming up to avoid injuries.
“The Amateur” hits theaters April 11.
