The upcoming spinoff of Dick Wolf’s FBI series on CBS, titled CIA, has the potential to rectify one of NBC’s Chicago Fire’s saddest departures by casting a suitable partner for Tom Ellis’ main character. Additionally, it could provide a long-overdue chance for an actor previously featured in Chicago Fire who has been absent from work recently.
Discussion about redemption often centers around how the CIA might salvage the cancellations of FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International. The CIA’s statement following the loss of two popular spinoffs stirred debate, but Ellis’ casting helped alleviate some worries. However, with two actors departing after Chicago Fire season 13, it serves as a reminder that one of the series’ former actors could fit perfectly into the CIA role.
Lauren German Is Tom Ellis’ Perfect FBI: CIA Partner
They’ve Already Nailed The Exact Relationship CIA Needs
Many fans of the show Lucifer might have recognized a hint of deja vu upon learning that Tom Ellis’ character Hart Hoxton was portrayed as a carefree agent who disregards rules. Conversely, his FBI partner is depicted as an agent who strictly adheres to regulations. So, you could say that Hoxton’s partner serves a role similar to Chloe Dekker in relation to Lucifer Morningstar.
It’s clear that Lauren German’s role in the CIA would be a natural match, given her long-standing chemistry with Ellis from their work on Lucifer. The early seasons of Lucifer provide the closest resemblance to the suspected dynamic they might have in the CIA. While there’s potential for romance, the real appeal lies in how they navigate their professional relationship.
As Lucifer grew weary of sticking to the rules, whereas Dekker found Morningstar’s methods unlawfully exasperating, they eventually came to value each other more, realizing the importance of their unique abilities. Given that Hoxton and his partner may experience a similar journey within the CIA, it makes sense to select a duo who have already been through such a path.
German Returning To The Dick Wolf Universe Can Make Up For Shay’s Chicago Fire Death
Her CIA Character Can Be More Than Just Chloe Dekker 2.0
Lauren German’s character Leslie Shay added a significant amount of humor to the first two seasons of Chicago Fire. Similar to her firehouse companion Lizzie Novak, Shay didn’t take much outside of her paramedic duties seriously. However, her spirit was snuffed out when debris from an explosion struck her in the head and took her life in the season 2 finale.
Despite the sadness surrounding Leslie Shay’s death on “Chicago Fire,” her contagious humor and close friendship with Severide truly made her seize every moment of life. Infusing German, Ellis’ partner in the CIA, with these distinctive traits would, in a way, resurrect some essence of Shay, while also creating a clear distinction between her character and Chloe Dekker’s persona.
Why Shay’s Death Is Still The Most Heartbreaking Loss In Chicago Fire
The Pain Of Her Loss Caused A Ripple Effect Through The 51
As a devoted fan of “Chicago Fire,” I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of loss when Rebecca Jones took her own life, a heart-wrenching event that unfolded a few episodes before Leslie Shay met her tragic end in an explosion. The buildup to Jones’ death was emotionally charged and moving, making her departure all the more poignant.
On the other hand, Shay’s death came unexpectedly, with no hints or warnings, in an explosion set by an arsonist whose justice was served on a different show. This sudden, shocking end left many fans of “Chicago Fire” feeling bereft and yearning for closure, especially those who don’t follow the crossovers.
It was particularly distressing to lose one of the most endearing characters from Chicago Fire. Shay was always the jovial type, and it’s not hard to imagine she would have found amusement in knowing her murderer resembled the suavest villain from Prison Break. With her laughter gone, Severide disintegrated so severely that he turned into a reckless, heavy drinker who exploited a mourning woman to conceal his own sorrow.
Sylvie Brett and Lizzie Novak certainly added life to Station 51, with Sylvie filling a void in Gabby and Kelly’s lives following Shay’s departure. However, Leslie Shay has proven to be irreplaceable since her demise on “Chicago Fire”. If the producers can somehow rekindle even a fraction of her spirit on screen, it would be longed for without delay.
