In last week’s episode of HBO’s The Last of Us, one of this year’s most jaw-dropping television moments occurred – viewers who weren’t familiar with the game or its twist about Joel’s fate were taken aback when he was brutally killed as an act of revenge. This scene mirrored a moment from the game five years ago, so gamers had been anxiously waiting to see when the show would enact this shocking event. What made episode 3 unique is that it allowed for something the game couldn’t – giving Joel a period of mourning at Jackson’s hands.
As a dedicated fan, in the captivating world of this game, when Joel met an untimely end, my heart broke alongside Ellie’s as she vowed to seek out those responsible, perpetuating a cycle of retribution. However, in Episode 3, we were granted a poignant moment where the town mourned Joel, shared his loss, and provided both Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) with heart-wrenching scenes to express their sorrow.
In the Behind-the-Scenes segment, Luna explained, “There’s an incredibly poignant moment when Tommy enters and finds his brother’s remains, which we filmed late into the night. I’ve reflected a lot on this scene, and I like to refer to it as a solitary vigil of sorts. It was indeed a very prolonged shooting period for that scene.
For the very first time, we get a peek into Joel’s home, necessitating the construction of an entire set since only the exterior had been previously used. Now, adorned with flowers and memorials, it’s Ellie who walks through alone, and the emptiness left by Joel’s absence is palpable.
At the start of Episode 3, Ellie seems to be grappling with a somber state of mind, much like the phases of mourning. Ramsey commented that she appears shattered and insensate, later escalating into intense rage. During the filming in Joel’s house, the scenes were heart-wrenchingly sad, leaving Ramsey in tears as he wept into Joel’s coat on occasion.
An extra scene was proposed by showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann to modify the storyline, specifically concerning Ellie’s decision to pursue Abby and the WLF group.
Druckmann shared that there will be a town hall gathering within the game, a feature they believe will add intrigue as it provides an opportunity for all characters to voice their opinions about the story’s progression. Two distinct viewpoints emerge in this discussion, he noted. One perspective advocates for forgiveness and moving on, while the other surprising advocate is Seth, who initially displayed prejudice but shows support for Ellie during the meeting when she decides to confront the WLF.
Ramsey noted that while the council’s outcome wasn’t the most significant yet, she was certain. She had made up her mind to pursue and bring to justice the person responsible for Joel’s death.
