The reputation of this franchise suffered after a disappointing Tom Cruise film nearly ten years ago. However, Blumhouse, James Wan, and Lee Cronin are teaming up to bring it back to life with a fresh take – and possibly a new name.
The Mummy is a classic monster in horror films, famously appearing in movies from the 1930s starring Boris Karloff and a popular, large-scale adventure film from the 1990s with Brendan Fraser. Now, according to film insider Daniel Richtman, the next movie featuring the ancient Egyptian creature won’t be called The Mummy – it will be titled The Resurrected.
After the trouble with the Cruise film, it makes total sense that Warner Bros. wants to distance this new movie from the older Universal Mummy films – especially the last one. Universal’s been pretty direct with their recent horror remakes, like The Invisible Man, Renfield, and Wolf Man, so fans know what they’re in for. While calling it The Resurrected definitely avoids confusion with the Cruise or Fraser versions, I worry some people might not realize it is a Mummy movie. It feels like a missed opportunity to clearly connect it to the franchise.
What We Know About ‘The Mummy’ Reboot

Universal Pictures
This new reboot of a classic horror film is different because it’s being released by Warner Bros., which might be unexpected given Universal’s history with the series. Perhaps Universal is still recovering from their previous attempt to bring the story back. Instead, the project is being handled by Warner Bros., New Line Cinema, Atomic Monster Productions (Wan’s company), and Blumhouse, and here’s what the movie is reportedly about:
Okay, so imagine this: a dad’s daughter vanishes, and then, eight years later, she just…shows up. But she’s not quite the same. It turns out she’s somehow connected to an ancient Egyptian mummy, and this dark force starts affecting his other child too. It’s a desperate situation, and he’s forced to consider a really dangerous, last-ditch ritual – one that could save his kids, but at a terrible cost: potentially turning himself into something monstrous. It’s a seriously creepy premise, and honestly, I’m already hooked!
As a huge horror fan, I’m really excited about the new Mummy movie! Knowing it’s coming from Lee Cronin – the director of Evil Dead Rise – and with James Wan and Blumhouse involved, I have a feeling it’s going to be much scarier than the 2017 version. They’ve been dropping these creepy little teasers, hinting at something truly terrifying coming in 2026, and Cronin himself has promised it’ll be a Mummy movie unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. I can’t wait!
The new Mummy film appears to be more intense and violent than previous installments. However, many fans are still hoping to see Brendan Fraser reprise his role in a fourth film. Although Fraser has expressed interest, a return to the franchise seems unlikely.
I’m so excited for this new movie, The Resurrected! I just heard the cast is amazing – Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, Verónica Falcón, and even May Calamawy from Moon Knight will be in it. It’s supposed to come out on April 17, 2026, and I’ve already marked my calendar!
