Those are the lyrics to the short musical intro for Seth Meyers’ “A Closer Look” segment. Meyers made a joke about budget cuts, saying that from now on, jokes would be followed by a “rim shot” sound effect, and the intro music for “A Closer Look” would be replaced with someone singing these lyrics instead of being played by the show’s live band. It’s a pretty simple song – the words are just “Time for a Closer Look.” Let’s just say it’s not exactly a masterpiece, and a sad goodbye to the Late Night band, right?
Now that this song has lyrics, someone will earn royalties from ASCAP, which is good news for them. Interestingly, even if the lyrics aren’t actually sung, the money still comes in. Johnny Carson and Gene Roddenberry both benefited from this, or rather, their estates do now. It seems they’re no longer with us, so the payments go to those who manage their legacies.
The Federal Communications Commission is continuing its scrutiny of late-night talk shows.
