Late Night Takes on Trump Tariffs and Elon Musk Loss

It’s high time those comical comedians working late at night were rewarded for their tireless efforts, and Elon Musk‘s recent defeat in the Wisconsin judge race certainly provides an amusing tale. Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, and the rest of their hilarious troupe (Strike Force Five) are having a blast dissecting Donald Trump’s new tariffs and Elon Musk’s unexpected loss in the Wisconsin election. Reportedly, groups backing Musk poured approximately $20 million into the race, only to see him lose by a ten-point margin to a Democratic judge. As for Trump, he’s busy implementing tariffs that economists predict could trigger an economic downturn. It’s worth mentioning that Jimmy Kimmel is taking a brief hiatus, but he’ll be back (likely with some witty Musk jokes) on April 7.

If Ireland must pay an additional fee for appearing on the Lucky Charms box, Colbert mimicked Trump, and the audience cheered. He also delved into history, stating that the last time tariffs were as high (in 1930), we faced a…global economic downturn. Wow! As he discussed Musk, Colbert mentioned that the Wisconsin election was disheartening for Elon Musk. The audience applauded again. “Spending such a large sum just to watch it go up in flames,” said Colbert. “Now he knows what it’s like to buy a Tesla.” Zing! (Similar to a Tesla overheating.)

Instead of delving merely into the news, “A Closer Look” probed into not only the headlines but also Meyer’s personal feelings. Intrigued, Meyers pondered over the sensation he felt after the Wisconsin win, describing it as, “I no longer grind my teeth, and the air feels fresh with warm light that brings colors back to view.” Kudos to Meyers for regaining his senses!

While Fallon paid more attention to the tariff discussions compared to the Musk issue, it seems there was a friendly wager between him and Meyers as to who would cover what topic, perhaps in their shared 30 Rock greenroom using rock-paper-scissors as a deciding factor. In his “News Smash” segment, Fallon juggled news items such as Trump’s tariffs, the announcement of new Beatles films, the March Madness Final Four, and the Hooters bankruptcy filing. He creatively labeled these stories as “Wow, ‘Let It Be,’ Go for Three,” and “Rest in Peace,” respectively.
