Last Of Us TV Boss Reacts To Neil Druckmann Leaving And Reveals Season 3 Release Window

In a recent interview, HBO’s content chief Casey Bloys spoke about Neil Druckmann leaving his role as director and co-showrunner of The Last of Us. Despite this change, he remains unfazed, as the series is still on track with plans for Season 3 in 2027.

He shared with Variety that it was delightful to have Neil join the project from its inception. Druckmann contributed to setting a roadmap for where the TV series is going, and along with the fact that the show’s other main executive, Craig Mazin, remains involved, gives Bloys confidence that everything will turn out well.

“So I think we’ll be in excellent shape. I’m not worried at all,” he said.

Additionally, Bloys pointed out that Druckmann was juggling the development of The Last of Us TV series alongside his day-to-day tasks at Naughty Dog concurrently.

“It’s a really big job that he’s got. So I understand why he needs to focus on that,” Bloys said.

Earlier this month, Druckmann revealed his decision to step away from the TV show to concentrate fully on writing and directing for the upcoming game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, at Naughty Dog studio where he serves as Studio Head and Creative Director. Now that he has left the TV series, he will be dedicating more time to his roles within these positions at Naughty Dog.

Season 3 is “Definitely planned for 2027”

In the same interview, Bloys disclosed that The Last of Us Season 3 is indeed in the works, set for release in 2027. Moreover, he explained that Mazin is still figuring out the perfect conclusion for The Last of Us series.

According to Bloys, Craig is uncertain if there will be two additional short seasons or a single extended season ahead. As of now, the decision hasn’t been made, and Bloys is simply going along with Craig’s guidance in this matter.

Earlier on, Mazin mentioned that a fourth season was crucial for wrapping up the story effectively. He expressed, “It’s impossible to conclude this tale within three seasons. If all goes well, we might have another chance to return and bring everything together in a fourth.

As a gamer, I was hit hard by the news that Pedro Pascal’s character, Joel, met his end. But fear not, the upcoming episodes seem to be all about Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby, with Bella Ramsey’s Ellie taking a backseat. Some might think this could pose a challenge in promoting the series, but according to Bloys, it’s a breeze.

He expressed that the title benefits significantly from being associated with a video game, and the first two seasons have become quite solidified. He also mentioned that he admires shows which present familiar themes but offer unique perspectives in their storytelling.

This week, I was thrilled to learn that The Last of Us scored an impressive 16 Emmy nominations, with one of them being for Best Drama! The first season alone garnered 24 nominations, bumping the show’s total to a whopping 40 nominations across its first two seasons. I can hardly wait to see how it fares come awards night!
