Last Of Us Boss Says A Fourth Season Is Essential

The popular HBO series “The Last of Us” is nearing the end of its second season, with a third already planned. The show’s creator, Craig Mazin, has revealed that they have a story in mind that cannot be told in less than four seasons. He further mentioned that he anticipates Season 3 to be longer than Season 2.

In simpler terms, Mazin stated to Collider, “It’s impossible to wrap up the story in a third season. Fingers crossed we’ll manage to continue and conclude it in a fourth.” Previously, HBO executives had indicated that The Last of Us was expected to end following its fourth season.

As a dedicated gamer, I can confidently say that just like in my favorite games, the creators have planned ahead for our beloved show. They’ve got a clear vision for where it’s going, and right now, Mr. Mazin is charting the course all the way to Season 4.

Mazin mentioned that they planned ahead to Seasons 3 and 4, aiming for maximum exposure. This way, they can avoid regretting small details like a character’s line, position, or wardrobe choice in a scene, saying ‘If only…’ about how much better the season could have been.

Mazin further mentioned that viewers can anticipate an exciting conclusion for Season 2, characterized by a suspenseful cliffhanger. He explained that the first season was intended to portray the events of the initial game, and due to The Last of Us: Part II requiring more narrative scope, it was necessary to continue the story across multiple seasons, thus presenting both challenges and new possibilities.

In Season 2, we find ourselves in a more conventional setup where the story concludes with a twist that leaves you thinking, “Wow, this is going to have a major impact!” The season finale sets up events that will significantly alter the course of the story, and we’ll return to continue it. As creators, we ponder over the possibilities and consider how best to develop the narrative based on what it allows us to explore further.

It’s uncertain yet where Season 2 might conclude the narrative, but Mazin expresses optimism that viewers will be pleased with the cliffhanger and eagerly await future episodes. He stated, “We aim to leave them wanting more when we return.

Additionally, Mazin mentioned that he thinks it’s quite probable that Season 3 might extend beyond Season 2, as the approach to the storyline and the unique possibilities it presents are slightly varied.

In comparison, Season 1 consisted of nine episodes, but Season 2 only has seven. The final episode of Season 2 will be aired on Sunday, May 25th.

The character’s death in Season 2 was so significant, it acted as a powerful narrative explosion that guided the writers’ decisions throughout the season. Unlike Season 1’s “Long, Long Time” episode which delved into a side story about Bill and Frank, deviations of this nature were impossible in Season 2 due to the impact of the major event. However, similar detours could potentially occur in Season 3.

“I think we’ll have a little more room there,” Mazin said of Season 3.

It’s looking like we might be waiting a while for Season 3 of The Last of Us, as production hasn’t started yet. Given the gap between Seasons 1 and 2, which was approximately two years, viewers might not see Season 3 until around 2027, but this is merely speculation based on past release schedules.

Concerning the game series, Naughty Dog hasn’t disclosed any upcoming installments of The Last of Us since the termination of The Last of Us Online, which was scheduled for December 2023. At present, they are working on a new project titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, a game that remains enigmatic not only to its players but also to those within it.
