Last of Us Actor Reveals Why He Won’t Watch Season 2 Finale and Praises New Jesse

In an exclusive interview, we managed to get in touch with actor Stephen A. Chang, who originally played Jesse in The Last of Us series, and discussed his reasons for not closely following the HBO adaptation as well as sharing his perspective on the heartrending ending of Season 2.

Nearly five years have passed since Naughty Dog’s groundbreaking launch of The Last of Us Part 2. Immediately after its release, millions of players dove in, but unfortunately for some, the surprising plot twists had already been revealed due to early leaks.

The innovative twists and risky construction of its storyline sparked discussions, and the sequel continues to do so even today. It’s a game that has earned a place among the most debated in gaming history.

In my opinion, it’s one of the most emotionally powerful experiences our medium has ever offered, but I don’t feel the need to revisit it anytime soon. I’ve already experienced deep sorrow – a fact that amused Stephen A. Chang (the original actor for Jesse in the source material) when we discussed this very topic during our conversation about HBO’s live-action adaptation.

After airing Episode 7 on May 25, 2025, both seasoned viewers and newcomers have gone through a similar emotional ordeal. We delved into Chang’s initial response to the surprising scene, as well as his choice to not watch each week.

Heads up! Here come some spoilers. If you haven’t played Part 2 of the game or watched Season 2 of the show yet and want to avoid knowing what happens, stop reading now.

The Last of Us Season 2’s last big shock

Even as you believe no more surprises could unfold for Season 2, creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann plunge Ellie’s tale even further into the darkest abyss.

As the final moments approach, the character Jesse, played by Young Mazino, receives a sudden and fatal gunshot wound to the head. There’s no pomp or circumstance, simply another lifeless figure among many.

Despite being pivotal in the initial stages of the game and widely adored by the series’ audience, this turn of events feels unusually chilling. Chang, who had breathed life into these scenes five years ago, recalls his thoughts racing when he first read the script, describing it as a genuine “tough test.

“We read it at a table read. ‘Jesse runs through the door and gets shot in the head.’

I exclaimed, ‘What’s going on here?’ As I turned the pages, I found myself questioning, ‘Why is my name no longer in the script?’

“Sh*t, I’m really dead.”

Showing understanding towards fans experiencing this trauma for the first time, Chang offered a thoughtful viewpoint about the character he played a key role in shaping.

It’s often not until we lose something or someone that we truly appreciate their value. Perhaps it was Jesse’s passing that made him so dearly loved.

Initially taken aback by the script, Chang now recollects the filming day with a more playful tone. Interestingly, he asked to execute Jesse’s ‘stunt’ demise personally. “I can at least do this,” he remembered thinking. “Just run forward and fall on a mat.

Despite my attempts, it turned out that someone else was chosen for the role, as Naughty Dog opted to bring in a professional stuntman. I jokingly replied, “Hey buddy, I could’ve faked it by falling onto a mat and pretending to be dead!

Why Jesse’s original actor doesn’t watch The Last of Us on HBO

Although actors like Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson were cast in different roles for the live-action adaptation of The Last of Us, Chang was not contacted. He remains hopeful for a future role, but humorously suggested that if something happened to Troy’s character, perhaps it might be better if he wasn’t involved!

“Maybe I’ll… no, I can’t be the one that does Jesse in,” he said with a laugh.

Chang has chosen not to watch the series as it’s being broadcasted, partly because of his involvement in the game. He humorously refers to himself as an “unusual actor” for avoiding the show.

I have a rather large self-confidence, and when I observe other performers, I can’t help but think, ‘That could be me. Why am I not there instead?’ Yet, I also find myself easily influenced. If I witness something, it tends to linger in my mind. I strive to maintain an open mindset.

When inquired about the possibility of surpassing those obstacles to see a different interpretation of the material, Chang responded negatively. Nevertheless, he conveyed his admiration for Neil [Druckmann] and emphasized his unwavering backing for The Last of Us and Naughty Dog.

I’m thrilled by its size and happy for Young Mazino. I’m very supportive overall. However, viewing it feels a bit unsettling to me, I suppose. This isn’t related to the content or the actors themselves, but rather they seem… peculiar.

Chang praises Young Mazino’s work as Jesse

For the first time ever, Chang hadn’t caught any episodes from Season 1 of the HBO series. Instead, his initial glimpse into it was at the LA premiere of Season 2. Consequently, he had to catch up with the first episode, but so far has decided not to watch past that.

In the initial chapter, we were introduced to a new version of Young Mazino stepping into the role previously played by Jesse. Remarkably, this interpretation is completely unique, having no trace of similarities to the original actor, as Chang clarified for us.

He seems capable of handling things on his own, and from what I’ve observed, he has the ability to take on roles independently – exactly as it should be. I wouldn’t want him seeking my assistance. Instead, discover your own path. It’s not meant to come off as rude, but I believe that’s what adds intrigue.

Speaking about Mazino’s performance, Chang expressed admiration, saying “I truly enjoyed seeing him in this role.” He added, “There’s an undeniable charm about him. He possesses a strong, natural ability to lead.

Furthermore, he believed that Young and lead actress Bella Ramsey had built a strong connection away from the camera, which significantly influenced their acting together on screen.

Even at the LA premiere, Chang found himself laughing after an amusing run-in with Young. Just as guests were about to depart, he noticed the actor from afar within the venue.

Excitedly, I exclaimed, ‘That looks just like him!’ I made my way towards him for a chat. I imagine he might have thought I was an overzealous fan.
