As a follower, I find myself deeply moved by the story of Larry David and Matt Lichtenberg. The bond between these two men is truly inspiring, a testament to loyalty, trust, and the power of believing in someone’s talent even when it seems unpromising.
In 1984, following Larry David’s success in securing a writing job on “Saturday Night Live,” he became Matt Lichtenberg’s client. At that time, David didn’t require representation, but Lichtenberg persistently approached him outside the Improv comedy club in New York and persuaded David to manage him.
Approximately a year following his departure from “SNL,” David found himself in a four-year period where he didn’t earn a single cent. During those challenging times, Lichtenberg maintained him as a client and covered his expenses. This act of kindness, remembered vividly by the wildly successful co-creator and showrunner of “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” caused David to become slightly emotional when he presented Lichtenberg with the title of Business Manager of the Year at the EbMaster‘s Business Managers Breakfast, an event sponsored by City National Bank.
In the late 1980s, “I phoned him and said, ‘Listen, you’re putting your efforts into me for nothing. Nothing will come of it. My mother has told me this a thousand times,'” David recounted saying to Lichtenberg. “Let’s terminate our professional partnership. We can still be friends. I don’t mind. It’s not a major issue.
But Lichtenberg wouldn’t cut David loose. When asked why, Lichtenberg told David that he could see his talent and influence in the fact that other top-tier comedians flocked to David’s standup performances. When David told the crowd that his association with Lichtenberg “is one of the few relationships that I never had any regrets about,” his voice caught ever so slightly, adding poignancy to the moment. “Going with him turned out to be one of the smartest decisions I’ve made in my life,” David added in closing.
Lichtenberg shared with the audience the events in his personal and professional journey that ultimately brought the New York native to Southern California’s sunny coast, where he now focuses on managing business matters for comedians. He humorously commented on his discomfort with being in the limelight, as it’s not something he’s accustomed to.
Upon receiving the Business Manager of the Year award, Lichtenberg remarked, ‘In essence, this honor symbolizes all the tasks I dislike performing.’ He dislikes dressing in formal attire, being the focus of attention, public speaking, consuming breakfast, and especially asking his clients for favors. In fact, he makes a conscious effort to avoid asking his clients for such requests.
Lichtenberg underscored the significance of building trust over extended periods with clients, much like his relationships with David and other comedians such as Will Ferrell and Lewis Black.
In essence, Lichtenberg ponders the distinction between intelligent individuals and successful ones, stating that successful people understand the importance of being surrounded by intelligent minds to achieve success. As business leaders, he likens our daily work to a high-stakes poker game where we’re all-in, putting everything on the line, hoping that no errors occur and if they do, they’re minor and can be swiftly rectified.
At the event, John Landgraf, the head of FX, served as the main speaker. He delved deeply into the current state of the industry, focusing on the evolving rules for how talent is compensated (a pressing topic for the attendees). He clearly distinguished between the tech giants that have recently ventured into entertainment and the established Hollywood studios steeped in storytelling.

Landgraf stated that we’re not just using the algorithm to copy previous successes, but rather, we’re drawn to the unique, groundbreaking creativity that is ‘The Bear.’ He expressed that he can’t predict where the next big idea will come from; it often seems to appear out of nowhere. That’s the enduring allure and mystery of this industry.
In her opening remarks, Kelly Coffey, CEO of City National Entertainment’s Private Banking and Wealth Management division, emphasized the significant impact and authority held by the entertainment industry.
According to Coffey’s observation, the worldwide entertainment and media industry consistently expands, generating an astounding $2.8 trillion each year. This encompasses various sectors such as film, television, theater, and digital media, all playing significant roles in shaping narratives and cultural norms. Notably, the music industry is thriving, earning nearly $30 billion globally. This impressive revenue underscores its adaptability and resilience, a trait we should consider in today’s rapidly changing world, driven by streaming platforms and backed by an increasing number of enthusiasts for physical media.
Stunning figures highlight the necessity for creative professionals, who frequently dedicate immense effort on a project-to-project basis, to receive financial advice from experts now more than at any other time in history.
Beyond just statistics, entertainment creates international bonds and comprehension that surpass boundaries, using common tales and melodies that resonate with everyone. This is particularly important in today’s world,” Coffey stated. “Leading professionals face complex and assorted tasks, as we witness at City National. They manage investments, broker deals, supervise real estate, strategize for the future – all while juggling multiple priorities each day.
