Kyle Chandler is back playing a football player, and it’s a welcome sight! The new series, Lanterns, reimagines the Green Lantern Corps – DC’s intergalactic police force – by setting it down to earth in the American Southwest. Chandler stars as Hal Jordan, a once-skilled pilot now working as a sheriff and a Green Lantern. He’s teamed up with John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), a younger, more disciplined Lantern, and it seems likely they’ll both learn a lot from each other.
It’s unclear who the main villain will be in this new series, and DC Studios hasn’t yet revealed much about the wider Green Lantern universe. Traditionally, Sinestro is Green Lantern’s first enemy, but this show seems to be heading in a different direction – more like a gritty drama reminiscent of Yellowstone. James Gunn’s leadership has generally involved exploring the stranger corners of DC comics, but this series appears to be leaning towards a darker, more serious tone, similar to Logan. Perhaps Nathan Fillion’s character, Guy Gardner, will bring some much-needed humor. We’ll have to wait until Lanterns premieres in August to find out.
