As a seasoned fan of Taylor Sheridan’s work, I must say that Landman has truly captured my heart with its raw, gritty portrayal of oil rigging life. After the shocking ending of Episode 1, ‘Dreamers and Losers’ only served to deepen the mystery and tension, leaving me on the edge of my seat.
Following the intense conclusion of Episode 1 – ‘Landman Episode 2: Dreamers and Losers’ delves into Tommy’s struggle with the emotional repercussions of the tragic explosion (be aware, there are upcoming spoilers!).
As a game enthusiast diving into Landman’s first episode, I’m left pondering several unanswered questions. Did Luis, Armando, or Elvio make it out alive after the oil well blast? What strategies will Tommy and Monty employ to manage the ensuing chaos? And is there any chance that Tommy and his daughter can mend their relationship enough for a peaceful chat in the future?
It’s apparent that Taylor Sheridan is continuing to expand his creative horizons with this new series. We’ve met the rough-talking Tommy Norris and his straightforward methods on the oil rig, but with troubles beginning to accumulate, it seems he may have bitten off more than he can chew.
Episode 2 picks up directly where the first left off, so let’s recap exactly what happens.
Landman Episode 2 recap
In Episode 2, we find ourselves delving into the immediate consequences of the devastating blast from the previous episode. Cooper has survived, though he’s hanging on by a thread. Unfortunately, Luis, Armando, and Elvio did not share the same fate.
At home, Tommy and Nate are having a disagreement about whether it’s cigarettes or excessive sugar that can prove fatal. Meanwhile, Ainsley remains present. Upon noticing that her boyfriend Dakota Loving is absent (thankfully), she becomes alarmed, despite being the one who initially asked him to depart.
There’s a quick, unexpected encounter between Dale and Ainsley when he comes home for a shower, unaware she was already in there. This results in Dale getting a broken nose and Ainsley becoming very upset. Following some discussions about bathroom usage, Tommy receives a call informing him about an accident happening at Cooper’s construction site.
At his grand home, Monty informs Tommy that a lawyer will arrive shortly to handle the mess involving the plane incident from episode one. However, he learns of some unexpected trouble, which he refers to as a “blowout.” From Monty’s distressed and enraged reaction, it is evident that he is dealing with significant stress.
Tommy quickly reaches the scene of the accident and springs into action. He locates Cooper, yet his focus seems more on determining whether Cooper turned off the valve rather than ensuring Cooper’s son’s wellbeing. Managing to accomplish it himself, he unfortunately injures his finger severely in the process. A cigarette on such an explosive site? No problem!
At the airport, attorney Rebecca Falcone arrives to help M-TEX Oil sort out their latest woes.
Hospitals and house calls
At the hospital, Tommy telephones Angela to inform her about Ainsley’s breakup and Cooper’s accident. As a medical professional enters his room, Tommy decides against thumb surgery and instead takes out a pocket knife. The doctor looks on in shock as Tommy removes the damaged part of his finger so they can sew it back together.
Afterward, he receives a call from the Sheriff, informing him that they’ve discovered a charred corpse at the well. However, the extent of the burns makes it impossible to identify the deceased. Meanwhile, in the emergency room, he converses with Cooper, who is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of his three recent companions.
However, Tommy has faced similar situations in the past, making him well-equipped to bypass any mourning period and take necessary actions. He urges Cooper to consider a different career path, as it might save him from having to deal with a similar predicament in the future.
At an athletics competition, Monty and his family are there to support their daughter as she competes. However, Monty is preoccupied on a call, sorting out next steps after the unfortunate accident. A decision is made to offer some financial assistance to the family of Luis, Armando, and Elvio as compensation. Later, Tommy visits the Medina residence to deliver sad news – all three men have tragically passed away.
The trouble with lawyers
Following a puzzlingly playful conversation with Angela, Tommy arranges to see Rebecca next. He escorts her to the location of the explosion incident, and they engage in a dispute over whether the danger is an inherent aspect of the work or if it’s due to negligence and malfunctioning tools. Rebecca wishes to talk to Cooper, but Tommy redirects her. Despite their disagreements, Rebecca maintains that she stands with Tommy.
At a corporate event, Monty and his spouse Cami find themselves, when suddenly, Monty receives a call from Tommy, visibly upset because they apparently sent Rebecca, who is known for her strict adherence to standards, and she’s likely to impose penalties for any subpar work. Tommy warns Monty, “Your operation won’t meet OSHA standards, Monty.” It’s evident that they’ve been skimping on safety measures somewhere.
However, Monty firmly responds to Tommy, “I am the one in charge here, and I kindly request that you never speak to me in such a raised tone again.
Later on, Tommy encounters a series of inconvenient phone calls, such as one from Ainsley requesting him to pick up a burger, followed by another call from Angela inquiring about her potential visit to Midland to assist with the children once more.
Upon returning home, Tommy joins forces with Ainsley for an evening meal. It transpires that Cooper left school to focus on developing a project for Tommy’s benefit, which Ainsley learns in the process. When Ainsley carelessly refers to him as a “failure,” Tommy seems pained and retorts, “We come here not to be failures, but to succeed.
Like father, like son
The day after, Cooper manages to leave the hospital. During their ride home, Cooper and Tommy have a disagreement about why Cooper desires to become a landman rather than completing his education. It’s evident that Cooper aspires to be like the affluent Monty Miller, but Tommy advises him that for every Monty, there are 100 more like him.
When Cooper informs him that the only gap between Tommy and Monty is that “Monty didn’t give up”, Tommy abruptly halts the vehicle. “I didn’t give up, I bled to death,” he angrily yells at his son. He sternly reminds Cooper that his team is now deceased.
However, Cooper firmly expresses his desire to manage an oil company someday. He implores Tommy to assign him to a different team. Although Tommy is reluctant, he guarantees that he will do so.
Landman Episode 3 will arrive on Paramount+ on November 24.
