Lady Gaga Says She And Joaquin Phoenix "Tore Up" And Revised Joker 2's Script

As a fan, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming release of Joker: Folie à Deux. The dynamic between Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix, both renowned artists in their respective fields, is truly intriguing. Their unique approach to script-rewriting during production adds an exciting layer of unpredictability to the film, making it a testament to collaborative filmmaking at its best.

Approximately four weeks from now, Joker: Folie à Deux will present moviegoers with Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quinn, opposite Joaquin Phoenix’s character, Arthur Fleck/Joker. Although Gaga is a seasoned musician and vocalist, this is her third significant film as the main actress. However, during the production process, Gaga received an unanticipated lesson in collaborative movie-making from Phoenix, as they revised lines from the script together.

“Gaga shared with Vogue that we frequently convened in Joaquin’s trailer, and at times, we’d discard the script entirely and begin anew. This method, according to Gaga, was both exciting and freeing.” Todd Phillips corroborated this account and provided insight into their unique approach.

Phillips shares his perspective on Joaquin, “He’s like the beacon of hope at the end of the tunnel.” He explains, “You might think we can just move forward with the scene, but Joaquin insists on a quick discussion first. Before you know it, three hours have passed and we’re rewriting the scene on a napkin. On the other hand, Lady Gaga is remarkable. She stands her ground both off-screen during our trailer revisions, which she likely spent the previous night learning, and on-screen. Her performance was nothing short of impressive.”

In the movie, Gaga’s portrayal of Harley is known as Harleen “Lee” Quinzel. Unlike in other versions where she’s Arthur’s therapist, here she’s a patient at Arkham Asylum who becomes entangled with the Joker. During an interview, Lady Gaga discussed her perspective on Harley’s journey into love and insanity.

In Gaga’s words, “Harley Quinn is someone widely recognized within pop culture,” she stated. “However, my process for creating her was unique, specifically tapping into my own personal struggles with mania and disorder. I ponder if, when life becomes excessively challenging, when we reach our breaking point, perhaps it causes…silence?

Joker: Folie à Deux will hit theaters on October 4.
