Lady Gaga Says ‘Joker 2’ Singing Is an ‘Extension of the Dialogue’ and ‘Unlike Anything I’ve Ever Done’; Harley Quinn Is Like One of Charles Manson’s Girls

As a seasoned movie critic with a particular affinity for musicals and character studies, I have had the pleasure of witnessing some truly extraordinary performances throughout my career. Yet, none have quite piqued my curiosity and intrigued me as much as Lady Gaga’s transformation in “Joker: Folie À Deux.”

In an interview with Empire Magazine, I shared that singing for “Joker: Folie À Deux,” the upcoming comic book musical, is a completely new experience for me. As I prepare to work alongside Joaquin Phoenix in this film, portraying the character Lee, who brings a fresh take on Harley Quinn, I’m excited for this unique opportunity.

“You all recognize me as Lady Gaga when I’m performing, don’t you? In this film though, I’m not just being myself. I’ve put effort into singing as the character, Lee, instead of my usual performer self. I wanted to make the music feel like a natural part of the dialogue and not an unexpected interruption.”

In “A Star Is Born,” directed by Bradley Cooper, Gaga portrayed the emerging musical sensation Ally. To convincingly embody this character, she had to master holding back and not singing in her usual voice. However, Ally was an exceptional talent, while Lee, on the contrary, lacks such abilities.

In my perspective, there are quite a few off-key notes when I sing as Lee. As a professionally trained singer, I have learned to control my breathing and maintain pitch and rhythm on stage. However, Lee doesn’t possess that technical knowledge. It feels like stripping away the intricacies of my craft and fully embracing who she is.

Todd Phillips, the director of “Joker: Folie À Deux,” shared with Empire that Lee’s portrayal of Harley Quinn in the movie is largely based on Lady Gaga’s own interpretation. However, there are elements that viewers may recognize as reminiscent of the comic book character.

“Phillips remarked about Lee, ‘She adopted a role similar to how Charles Manson’s females admired him.’ He explained, ‘Some incarcerated murderers have followers. In our film, there are elements inspired by Harley from the comics; however, we shaped it according to our creative vision.'”

The film “Joker: Folie À Deux” is set to make its worldwide debut at the Venice Film Festival’s competition segment in September. It will then be released in cinemas starting October 4, distributed by Warner Bros.
