To date, just a few third-party games have been officially announced for the Nintendo Switch 2. However, it seems that some developers are still waiting for their development kits, which may be why we’re seeing fewer game announcements at this time.
In a recent podcast, YouTube user Nate the Hate (as reported by TheGamer) highlighted an observable gap in the console’s library when it comes to games developed by third-party developers and independent studios.
Nate the Hate has been discussing a topic that has been a hot subject among Nintendo enthusiasts ever since the launch of the Switch 2. Lately, this debate has heated up even more. The main question on everyone’s minds is: “Where are the games? When will we see game announcements from third-party developers and independent partners, and when can we expect them to release?”
Reflecting on our conversation, I’d like to add that the root of this issue can be traced back to GDC 2025. At that time, Digital Foundry expressed concerns over the fact that many development partners were unable to get their hands on dev kits.
He clarified that this point applies broadly, not just to independent developers but also to those in the double-A and lower tier of triple-A development. Many of these developers are left puzzled, asking themselves when Nintendo will provide them with the necessary tools.
Nate the Hate’s fellow host, Modern Vintage Gamer, asserted that numerous game studios and publishers currently lack the necessary development hardware for Switch 2. He estimates that around two-thirds of the studios who developed games for the initial Switch do not have access to these dev kits at this point in time.
According to Modern Vintage Gamer, around a third of the developers and publishers who have worked on Nintendo Switch version 1 games already possess Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, whereas the rest are yet to receive their devices.
Although Microsoft hasn’t officially confirmed which third-party games will be released later, Nate later stated that several companies such as Capcom and Sega are still awaiting development kits. He also mentioned that while Microsoft intends to support the console, issues with the development kits will delay their plans until 2026.
He mentioned that companies such as Capcom, Sega, Ubisoft, Bandai Namco, and numerous others are eagerly anticipating, as they possess games they’re excited to reveal for this platform. He emphasized that there’s a great deal of backing and support on its way to this platform.
On the newly-released Switch 2 console, you’ll now find the games Fortnite, Split Fiction, Hogwarts Legacy, along with Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition which is slated for release later this year. Additionally, the Switch 2 version of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition has been unveiled and is due to receive update 2.3 shortly.
