‘La Pecera’ Producer Solita Boards Divorce Drama ‘March 14th,’ by Locarno Match Me! Player Contraria Media (EXCLUSIVE)

As an admirer of the dynamic world of international film production, I am thrilled to share my perspective on the latest development in the Spanish film industry. The news that Solita Films, a renowned Spanish production house, has joined Alberto Gross Molo’s feature debut “Catorce de Marzo” (March 14th) is truly exciting!

Spain’s film production company Solita Films, led by director-producers José Esteban Alenda and César Esteban Alenda (of “Sin Fin” and “La Pecera” fame), has signed on to produce Alberto Gross Molo’s first feature film “Catorce de Marzo,” also known as “March 14th.”

At Barcelona’s Contraria Media, a new production company, the divorce-themed film project is being prepared. This company is among the 36 selected emerging producers for the networking event “Match Me!” at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. The event will be held from August 9th to 11th.

The project involves Catorce de Marzo AIE and Ayhe Productions as additional producers as well.

The project is spearheaded by Contraria Media’s co-founders Laura Egidos Plaja and Albert Aynés Clapés, along with David Aymerich of Ayhe and the Esteban Alenda Brothers. Egidos and Cecilia Rivas serve as executive producers.

By summer 2025, “March 14th” production is in its final stages of development and requires financing. They are currently seeking a European co-producer and a sales agent to collaborate on the project.

The film, penned by Gross Molo and Tomàs Bayo, tells the story of Héctor, a 11-year-old boy, and his 6-year-old sister Gema. On the eve of their parents’ divorce trial, they grapple with the fear that if they express different preferences for where they want to live, they could be forced apart.

Since the year 2021, this project has participated in a series of rigorous laboratory or competition stages. It attended Poland’s Ekran+ and Zagreb Film Festival My First Script in Croatia (in 2021), Spain’s Faberllull (in 2022), Madrid’s La Incubadora ECAM, also located in Spain (in 2024), and Germany’s Berlinale Talents Script Station and D’A Film Lab in Barcelona (also in the year 2024).

As a movie buff, I was thrilled to attend Wrocklaw’s New Horizons Studio+ meet last month, held from July 18-21. During this event, I had the immense pleasure of receiving an award from the Producers’ Guild of Poland. This recognition comes with an invaluable perk: mentoring from a seasoned industry professional who will guide me through the intricacies of film production. What a fantastic opportunity to learn and grow!

The project made it as a finalist in the 2022 Julio Alejandro Screenplay Award, which is the 19th edition of this contest hosted by Fundación SGAE, recognizing the best un-produced Spanish screenplays.

The makers behind the project due on March 14th have secured financing and submitted their applications for Spanish production grants.

A prominent arthouse film production company with strong ties to Latin American artists and their industry, Solita, has showcased its latest films at prestigious festivals including Berlinale, Sundance, San Sebastián, and Málaga. In 2024, it earned multiple Goya Award nominations for the best Ibero-American film, specifically for “La Pecera,” which made its global debut at Sundance in 2023.

The Esteban Alenda brothers expressed their excitement about witnessing the project’s progress at La Incubadora and the impressive development work they’ve observed. They are thrilled to be a part of “March 14th,” Alberto’s feature film debut, as Solita Films values bold productions that provoke thought and evoke emotion in viewers. This is precisely what “March 14th” delivers.

“Gross Molo, the writer-director, expressed his fascination with intricate family dynamics and delving into conflicts through the subtle nuances and unspoken moments,” is one way to paraphrase the given statement.

Specifically, “March 14th” was used by Gross Molo to illustrate the intricacy of a divorce that is not handled properly.

As a concerned fan, I can relate to his perspective when he says, “I prefer shifting the conversation towards the kids’ experiences instead of debating victims and offenders. It’s heartbreaking to see how often children unwillingly get entangled in conflicts that aren’t their own.”

“Laura Egidos Plaja of Contraria Media commented that this compelling narrative from Gross aligns with his past productions, including ‘Broken Roots’ which received a Jury Mention at the 2019 Tallinn Black Nights – PÖFF Shorts, ‘Solo,’ nominated for best short film at the Gaudí Awards in Catalonia, and ‘As It Was’ (2024),” said Laura Egidos Plaja of Contraria Media.

“Egidos, a long-time collaborator of Alberto, noted that in his early works and especially in his debut feature, Alberto shows a strong inclination towards examining family and human conflicts in a genuine, unpolished way. His unique, heartfelt style has the power to evoke deep emotions in audiences, leaving them pondering over the impactful scenes they have witnessed.”

The Locarno Film Festival takes place from August 7th to 17th, featuring the international networking program “Match Me!” for professionals.
