Author L.J. Smith, renowned for writing “The Vampire Diaries” book series which later became a popular TV show on The CW, passed away on March 8 at the age of 66.
According to Julie Divola, Smith’s partner, and Judy Clifford, his sister, they informed The New York Times about Smith’s passing. After a prolonged struggle with an autoimmune disorder, Smith breathed his last in Walnut Creek, California.
Born on the 4th of September, 1958, in Florida, Smith was originally known as Lisa Jane Smith before moving to California for her upbringing. Her academic background is in experimental psychology, which she earned at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Initially, she dedicated her professional life to special education and kindergarten teaching.
Smith’s debut novel was titled “The Night of the Solstice,” a fantasy work that she initially penned during her high school years. This book sparked an agreement with Alloy Entertainment for her to write “The Vampire Diaries.” The series commenced in 1991 with the release of its first three books, and the fourth was published the following year in 1992.
The television series made its first appearance in 2009 and ran until 2017. Actress Nina Dobrev portrayed Elena Gilbert, a character who attracted the attention of vampires named Damon Salvatore, played by Ian Somerhalder, and Stefan Salvatore, acted by Paul Wesley.
Despite initially receiving a modest advance for the early books in “The Vampire Diaries” series, Smith secured another agreement with Alloy Entertainment in the 2000s to expand it with a trilogy. However, she was let go in 2011, and the remainder of the series was written by someone else.
Later on, Smith shifted her focus to penning fan stories set within the “Vampire Diaries” universe to expand upon her existing work. As Divola shared with The New York Times, Smith felt deeply upset and outraged when someone else was brought in as a writer for the series.
Apart from “Dark Visions” and “Night World,” which form a young adult series, and “The Secret Circle,” the basis for a brief TV adaptation on CW, Smith authored several other works as well. Among them is a novel titled “Lullaby,” along with two additional books in the “Night World” series. Unfortunately, she passed away before completing more stories.
Smith is survived by her partner, sister, a nephew, a niece and grand nephew.
