As a lifelong cinephile and avid supporter of international cinema, I am absolutely thrilled by the lineup for the 12th edition of the QCinema International Film Festival in the Philippines. The diverse range of films from established auteurs like Sean Baker, Pedro Almodóvar, and Lav Diaz, to emerging talents such as Neo Sora and Bor Ocampo, promises an unparalleled cinematic experience that is not to be missed.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve learned about the lineup for the 12th edition of the QCinema International Film Festival in the Philippines. The event is kicking off with “Directors’ Factory Philippines,” an exciting collaboration between eight filmmakers from various Asian countries, pairing up Filipino directors with their counterparts across Asia. The grand finale will be the screening of Kiyoshi Kurosawa‘s “Cloud,” which has been submitted by Japan for the 97th Academy Awards and will close the festival in November. Can’t wait to see what these incredible filmmakers have in store for us!

This anthology consists of four movies: “Walay Balay” is directed by Eve Baswel and Malaysia’s Gogularaajan Rajendran; Maria Estela Paiso works together with India’s Ashok Vish on “Nightbirds”; Arvin Belarmino joins forces with Cambodia’s Lomorpich Rithy for “Silig”; while Don Eblahan collaborates with Singapore’s Tan Siyou on “Cold Cut.

This year’s festival taking place in Quezon City will showcase a total of 77 films, divided into 55 feature-length films and 22 short films, spread across 11 different categories, all under the theme “Perspective” or “The Gaze.

Eight films are competing in the main event Asian Next Wave:

Completing the roster of contenders are several notable entries: “Stranger Eyes” directed by Yeo Siew Hua, a Venice main competition pick from Singapore, France, Taiwan, and the U.S., who was victorious in this category back in 2018 for “A Land Imagined”; “Viet and Nam,” selected for Cannes Un Certain Regard, directed by Truong Minh Quy of Vietnam, Philippines, and Switzerland; and Bor Ocampo’s debut film “Moneyslapper” from the Philippines, making its world premiere.

At the heart of this festival lies Screen International, a premier platform showcasing masterpieces from renowned filmmakers. These include Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winning film “Anora,” Pedro Almodóvar’s Venice Golden Lion honoree “The Room Next Door,” Payal Kapadia’s Cannes Grand Prix victor “All We Imagine as Light,” and the work of Filipino director Lav Diaz, titled “Phantosmia.

This year’s QCShorts competition is extending its reach beyond the Philippines, showcasing a total of six local winners along with contestants from various Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, where “WAShhh,” the Locarno-winning film by Mickey Lai, will be presented.

New sections include QCLokal for Filipino cinema, Rediscovery for classics including Akira Kurosawa’s “Ran,” and Contemporary Italian Cinema. RainbowQC and New Horizons competitions join as international sections under Special Critics Prize awards, with RainbowQC showcasing LGBTQIA+ cinema including three Cannes Queer Palm nominees, while New Horizons presents debut features including Berlin’s Best First Feature winner “Cu Li Never Cries” by Phạm Ngọc Lân.

The festival takes place from November 8th to the 17th, spreading across several locations such as Gateway Cineplex 18, Ayala Malls Cinema at Trinoma, Red Carpet at Shangri-la Plaza, and Powerplant Mall. During the same period, the related project market will also be running from November 14th to the 16th.
