In the Netflix animated film KPop Demon Hunters, the characters’ ages may not be immediately apparent to viewers, but upon closer examination of the plot, it becomes clear that their age is significant. The main characters are a three-generation team of demon hunters known as HUNTR/X, who have day jobs as Korean pop stars. On the opposing side, there is a group of malicious demons, led by the demon king Gwi-Ma, who seek to gain power by consuming human souls.
Under the guidance of Chris Appelhans and Maggie Kang, KPop Demon Hunters unveiled an expansive mythology centered around a prolonged conflict between hunters and demons. This captivating tale left viewers intrigued and curious about certain character details, including their ages within the context of the film.
How Old Are the KPop Demon Hunters?
The narrative of the series “KPop Demon Hunters” primarily focuses on a group of contemporary hunters called HUNTR/X, made up of three close friends and popular KPop artists: Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. These companions utilize their music to ward off demons from devouring human spirits, with their ultimate objective being the creation of a potent magical barricade called the Honmoon, which they intend to use to vanquish the terrifying demon king, Gwi-Ma.
In my review of “KPop Demon Hunters”, while the film doesn’t provide explicit age details for its leading trio, subtle hints within the movie and a glance at their real-life counterparts might offer some intriguing insights into their respective ages.
In an interview with Forbes, the director of “KPop Demon Hunters,” Maggie Kang revealed that the characters Rumi, Mira, and Zoey were modeled after popular real-life KPop groups, such as ITZY, BLACKPINK, and TWICE.
“[We looked at] ITZY, BLACKPINK, and [TWICE]. Who else? I think it was a lot of mixing.”
These KPop groups’ members vary from age 24 to 30, suggesting that the main three characters’ ages might fall within that bracket.
Rumi might be the eldest in the group, considering Huntrix is approximately 28-29 years old. For reference, TWICE’s leader, Jihyo, who is one of their older members, is also 28 years old. On the other hand, Mira could potentially be around the same age or slightly younger (around 23-25 years old).
During an interview with Forbes, Kang shared that the character Mira draws inspiration from Ahn So-yeon, a 23-year-old model in real life from YG KPlus. This suggests that Mira might be approximately the same age as Ahn So-yeon.
In the TV series “KPop Demon Hunters”, it was made clear that Zoey is a high school student. Although her introduction could have originated from a music video, she remains the youngest member of the group. Since she exhibits a youthful exuberance, it’s likely that her character is between her teens and early twenties, with 20 years old being the most probable age for this role. This assumption is supported by her energetic performance in the movie, as demonstrated by Ji-young Yoo’s portrayal of Zoey in “KPop Demon Hunters”, who also voiced the character in the series (for more information on Ji-young Yoo’s previous work, check out her role in the series “Expats” where she provided the voice for Zoey).
How Old Is Rumi In KPop Demon Hunters?
Rumi isn’t just the lead singer for HUNTR/X; she also takes on the roles of team captain and guide for both Mira and Zoey. Her physical appearance and being a half-demon suggest that she’s likely the eldest member within the group.
In the newest Netflix animated film, KPop Demon Hunters has confirmed that Rumi possesses extensive experience in performance, implying she may have been a pop sensation for some time. Given this, it’s plausible that Rumi is 28 years old, an age that strikes a nice balance between not being too mature and still qualified to head the group.
It’s important to mention that the voice actor behind Rumi, Arden Cho, is presently 39 years old. In a potential sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, we could delve deeper into Rumi’s age and how her unique lineage might influence her aging process.
How Old Is Jinu?
In the film “KPop Demon Hunters”, it was revealed that before taking over as the demon leader of Saja Boys, Jinu was already over 400 years old. Originally a human who lived during Japan’s Edo period (as suggested by his age estimate), he underwent a transformation into a demon at the hands of Gwi-Man, preventing him from growing older ever since.
In the film “KPop Demon Hunters”, Jinu was previously established as a musician, centuries before the story unfolds in the present. His fervent desire for a better life led to his undoing, as he was swayed by Gwi-Ma’s influence and eventually made a deal that would ultimately lead him to the dark side.
In simpler terms, Jinu chose to assist Gwi-Ma in tormenting Rumi and others as he yearned for the demon king to wipe out his memories of his past betrayal towards his family. However, Rumi’s brave resistance against Gwi-Man eventually made Jinu understand his mistake. As a result, he decided to give up his life for her and the greater good (solidifying her redemption in the movie’s conclusion).
