Korea’s Kakao Entertainment Teams With Japan’s Babel Label, ‘Journalist’ Director Fujii

Through a fresh collaboration, the Korean entertainment firm Kakao Entertainment is broadening its reach on the global stage, partnering with the Japanese content studio Babel Label. This strategic alliance is geared towards jointly creating compelling dramas and adapting Kakao’s intellectual property (IP) library for international viewers.

The initial joint venture under this partnership will be led by Babel Label’s director, Fujii Michihito, who is embarking on his first venture with a Korean firm. Notably, Fujii garnered six awards at the 43rd Japan Academy Film Prize for “The Journalist” (2019), a film that featured Korean actor Shim Eun-kyung and later transformed into a Netflix series available in 190 countries. His subsequent work, “Faceless” (2024), was honored with 13 awards across 12 different categories at the 48th Japan Academy Film Prize.

The Japanese filmmaker’s body of work encompasses “The Last 10 Years” (released in 2022), which brought in around $20.4 million at the Japanese box office and drew 560,000 viewers in South Korea. Additionally, his joint production with Taiwan, “18×2 Beyond Youthful Days” (2024), garnered a total of 2.8 million viewers across Asia and generated approximately $19.3 million at the box office.

Fujii, who has previously directed Japanese adaptations of the Korean thriller “A Hard Day” and romance drama “Nevertheless,” expressed: “Babel Label has secured a collaboration with Kakao Entertainment, driven by our shared conviction that we can explore deeper waters and conquer greater peaks. As a global studio, we aim to advance and encourage growth within both South Korea’s and Japan’s media sectors.

Established in 2010 alongside Fujii, Babel Label has crafted a diverse range of content by collaborating with talented writers and directors who transcend traditional genre boundaries.

Jang Se-jung, the CEO of Content CIC at Kakao Entertainment, expressed gratitude for the growing global interest in Korean content. He noted that the production skills of Korean dramas and films, the talent of Korean actors, and the endless story ideas from web novels and webtoons are now capturing the attention of the international content industry. With their partnership with Babel Label, they aim to showcase a diverse range of high-quality works that will boost their global studio competitiveness and expand the reach of Korean content worldwide.

This partnership is another move in Kakao Entertainment’s content approach, with the company utilizing its multi-studio setup consisting of production studios and talent management agencies. For 2025, Kakao plans to adapt some of their popular webtoons and web novels, including “Crushology” on MBC, Netflix’s “Karma,” and Watcha’s “Secret Relationship.”

Kakao’s ongoing projects encompass a variety of productions, such as the Netflix series “When Life Gives You Tangerines,” featuring IU and Park Bo-gum, and the Disney+ production “Nine Puzzles,” starring Kim Da-mi and Son Suk-ku. Additionally, the film “The Match” with Lee Byung-hun is scheduled for a Korean theater release on March 26th.
