As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for international cinema, I must say I am genuinely intrigued by the upcoming release of “Victory”. With a rich background in Korean dramas and films, having delved into classics like “Sunny” and “Scandal Makers”, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation.
The inspiring movie titled “Victory,” focusing on cheerleading, has already gained significant attention and been successfully pre-purchased before its upcoming theatrical launch in South Korea.
Under the guidance of director Park Beom-su, renowned for “Single in Seoul” and “Red Carpet,” the movie follows a dynamic high school dance duo who captivate their rural community with an emotional cheerleading routine, and an undersized soccer team from a secluded island fighting to make a name for themselves.
The movie has been purchased by 815 Pictures for North America, Sky Films Entertainment for Taiwan, Lumix Media for Vietnam, PT Prima Cinema Multimedia for Indonesia, House of M for Thailand, Emphasis Video Entertainment for in-flight distribution, and Westec Media Limited for Cambodia. A Seoul-based sales agency, Finecut, managed all the rights negotiations.
The movie made its debut as the opening feature at the New York Asian Film Festival. It’s set to be released commercially in South Korea on August 14th. Subsequently, it will hit theaters in North America and Vietnam on August 16th. Further releases are planned for Indonesia, Taiwan, Cambodia, and Thailand from late August through September.
The series titled “Victory” features Lee Hye-ri, renowned from “My Punch Drunk Boxer” and “TV’s Reply 1998,” alongside Park Se-wan, who gained recognition through “Life Is Beautiful” and “6/45.” Together, they portray a dancing pair.
In the TV series “Thank You” and “Doctor Cha”, the actress Cho A-ram previously belonged to a cheerleading squad in Seoul. She later relocated to a rural area, while Lee Jung Ha, known for her role in Disney+’s “Moving”, portrays a member of a school soccer team that consistently loses, serving as the goalkeeper.
As a supporter, I’m thrilled to be part of the project brought forth by Annapurna Films, led by the visionary producer Lee Anna, who has masterminded box office successes like “Sunny” and “Scandal Makers.” This new film is proudly presented by Mindmark, an intellectual property company under the Shinsegae Group, known for their cultural content contributions. They’ve played crucial roles as financiers and Korean distributors in films such as “Brave Citizen,” “Love Reset,” and “Honey Sweet.” Their portfolio also boasts Hur Jin-ho’s “A Normal Family” and “Boss.” I’m excited to be a part of this creative collaboration.
