As a seasoned film critic with a penchant for global cinema and a soft spot for romantic comedies, I found myself deeply engrossed in the latest South Korean box office report. The weekend of November 5th, 2024, proved to be an intriguing one, as the nation’s cinemas witnessed a sluggish performance.

This past weekend saw the South Korean box office experiencing its lowest earnings for the year, even with the debut of movies like “Hear Me: Our Summer,” “Red One,” and “Anora.

“Venom: The Last Dance” and “Hear Me: Our Summer” were essentially tied for first place.

In terms of revenue, “Venom: The Last Dance” retained the number one spot with an impressive $1.19 million, as reported by Kobis, a Korean Film Council-operated tracking service. However, when it comes to local box office rankings based on ticket sales, it came in second place due to selling 168,000 tickets in total.

As a film aficionado, let me share some intriguing insights about the movie “Hear Me: Our Summer.” This heartwarming Korean remake of a 2009 Taiwanese romantic comedy brought in an impressive $1.17 million at the box office and sold a staggering 169,000 tickets during its initial release.

In simple terms, the overall box office revenue for all theaters across the country was only $4.34 million during that weekend, marking it as the weakest weekend of 2024 and an ongoing struggle following the summer lull.

In third position, lagging behind, was the Korean production titled “Amazon Bullseye,” a comedic film centered around a renowned Korean archer. This champion experiences a humbling journey when a plane crash forces him into the dense Brazilian rainforest, where he encounters tribesmen whose archery skills surpass his own. Over the course of three days, it grossed $534,000 and has amassed a total of $3.38 million after two weeks in theaters.

In fourth place, ‘Red One’ trailed slightly, having brought in $221,000 during the weekend and a total of $325,000 throughout its initial five days.

The Korean TV series titled “Love in the Big City” ranked fifth and garnered approximately $118,000. From its premiere on October 1, it has accumulated a grand total of around $5.82 million.

Hur Jin-ho’s drama “A Normal Family” finished in sixth position, earning a total of $115,000 in its latest run. Since its release on October 15th, the film has accumulated a grand total of $4.25 million.

In the U.S., the animated film “The Wild Robot” earned $107,000 in its debut week and ranked seventh. To date, it has amassed a total of $4.25 million. Meanwhile, the Cannes Palme d’Or winner, “Anora”, opened at number eight, earning $96,000 over the weekend and $164,000 in five days. A Korean production took home $76,000 during its first weekend and accumulated $127,000 within its initial five days of release.

“Little Eggs: A Frozen Rescue”, a captivating Mexican animated film, debuted last Thursday and managed to bring in a total of $75,000 during its first four days on the big screen.
