Korea Box Office: ‘The Match’ Dominates Again as ‘The Amateur’ Debuts at No. 2

For a third straight weekend, the South Korean box office was dominated by domestic films, with “The Match” continuing to lead the pack and earning approximately $2 million, representing nearly 53% of the weekend’s overall earnings.

The sports movie based on the historic Go rivalry between Cho Hun-hyun and Lee Chang-ho has earned an additional 306,028 tickets, raising its total earnings to $11.8 million and overall ticket sales to 1.81 million, as reported by Kobis, a tracking service run by the Korean Film Council.

In the second slot, we find the American spy-thriller “The Amateur,” initially earning $325,352 from 47,963 ticket sales upon release. Starring Rami Malek as a renegade CIA cryptographer, the movie has since accumulated a total of $492,149 in box office revenue since its premiere on April 9.

In the latest box office rankings, the South Korean comedy-drama “Lobby” fell to third position, earning an additional $290,668 and attracting 41,512 more viewers. To date, the movie has amassed a total of $1.6 million, with over 243,000 people attending screenings.

In the fourth spot, “Attack on Titan The Movie: The Last Attack” continued to captivate anime enthusiasts, raking in approximately $283,162. Since its release in mid-March, the Japanese franchise finale has accumulated close to $5 million in Korea with a total of 709,512 admissions.

Over the weekend, I was thrilled to see the re-release of the enchanting Japanese romantic drama, “Let Me Eat Your Pancreas.” It managed to secure the fifth spot at the box office, earning a fantastic $90,039 and attracting 14,685 moviegoers. This has significantly boosted its long-standing Korean earnings, now standing proudly at an impressive $2.7 million.

In sixth place over the weekend, ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ earned $87,542 from 14,222 ticket sales, bringing its total earnings to $92,025. Not far behind was ‘Flow’, an animated movie that garnered $88,624 from 12,860 weekend viewers, and has now surpassed the milestone of $1 million in total gross.

In a stunning debut, the action-packed thriller “Weekend in Taipei” ranked eighth with gross earnings of $80,596 and 12,691 ticket sales, playing on 475 screens. Subsequently, the biopic “Better Man,” which chronicles the life of pop sensation Robbie Williams, entered the charts at ninth place, earning $54,554 and attracting 9,128 viewers. To date, it has generated a total of $125,361 in South Korea.

Completing the list of the top 10 earners, the movie “Conclave” boosted its earnings by $50,862, reaching a grand total of $1.7 million from 266,927 ticket sales.

The top 10 titles brought in $3.4 million, marking a decline from last weekend’s $5.6 million.
