Korea Box Office: ‘I, The Executioner’ Achieves $50 Million Total, as ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ Makes Second Place Debut

As a dedicated cinephile with a soft spot for Korean cinema and a keen eye for box office trends, I’ve been closely following the South Korean film industry’s trajectory this year. “I, The Executioner” continues to impress me, extending its reign at the top of the South Korean weekend box office. It’s a testament to the power of sequels when done right, and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

The Korean-produced crime-comedy-thriller titled “I, The Executioner,” the follow-up to the 2015 blockbuster ‘Veteran,’ maintained its number one position on South Korea’s weekend box office. In its fourth full week of release, it generated $1.68 million, outperforming the new release “Joker: Folie a Deux.

The movie titled “The Executioner” has experienced a decrease in its market share, dropping to 29%, as reported by Kobis, a data tracking service run by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Over the latest weekend, this film added $49.97 million to its total earnings since its release on September 13. Currently, it ranks as the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year in South Korea, trailing behind “Exhuma,” “The Roundup: Punishment,” and “Inside Out 2,” which continues to lead with $64 million in revenue.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the highly anticipated “Joker: Folie a Deux” raked in an impressive $1.17 million during its first weekend (Friday through Sunday) and managed to secure a 21% market share, as reported by Kobis. Expanding its opening run to five days, encompassing Thursday’s National Foundation Day holiday, the film amassed a stunning $3.60 million in total!

On its premiere day (October 1st), the Korean film “Love in the Big City” raked in $897,000 over the weekend and a total of $1.88 million within five days. The drama features Kim Go-eun, who is best known for her roles in “Exhuma”, “Cheese in the Trap”, and “Yumi’s Cells”.

This past week, “The Wild Robot” animation took the lead among the top five animated movies, clinching the number one spot. The film grossed an impressive $741,000 over the weekend and a total of $1.69 million during its first five days in theaters.

Over the weekend, “Transformers One,” which had the biggest opening, dropped down to the fifth spot in the box office rankings. It brought in $251,000, bringing its overall earnings up to $2.16 million.

The movie ‘Detective Conan: The Skyscraper Under Threat’ took in $152,000 to finish in 6th position during its opening weekend. Since it started on Thursday, it made a total of $412,000 over the course of four days.

The revamped “Begin Again” landed at the seventh spot during the recent weekend release. It generated approximately $127,000, adding to its total earnings from its initial 2014 release of around $21.7 million.

The heartwarming movie “Tiny Whispers of Love,” a Korean animated production, solidified its position as the highest-grossing Korean animation film ever made, amassing $7.91 million in total earnings since August 3rd. Over the weekend alone, it brought in an additional $118,000.

Lim Young Woong’s concert film “IM Hero The Stadium” secured the ninth position due to its high-tier ticket prices, bringing in a revenue of $94,500, adding up to a grand total of $6.63 million.

The tenth position was claimed by the recently launched Japanese animated film, “Farewell, My Lovely Partner, Butt Detective: The Movie.” It brought in a total of $62,900 over the weekend and approximately $226,000 within five days.

The overall earnings from weekend movies fell short of expectations, totaling approximately $5.54 million. In fact, it was only slightly better than the second weakest weekend of the entire year.
