Korea Box Office: ‘Alien: Romulus’ Grabs Opening Weekend Win as ‘Twisters’ Blows Softly

As a seasoned cinephile with a soft spot for international cinema, I must admit that the Korean box office has been quite the spectacle lately. The latest addition to the Alien franchise, “Alien: Romulus,” swooped in and took the top spot, leaving no doubt about its popularity among Korean audiences. The film’s impressive opening weekend earnings of $3.47 million are a testament to its global appeal, and I can’t wait to catch it myself!

As a cinephile, I found myself in the midst of a thrilling cinematic experience over the recent weekend, as “Alien: Romulus” soared to the number one spot at the South Korean box office amidst an impressive lineup of five fresh releases vying for attention on the top ten chart.

Over the weekend, the U.S. horror-thriller film franchise brought in approximately $3.47 million and accounted for 28% of the market share according to data from Kobis, a tracking service run by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). In total during its five-day opening, the movie titled “Alien Romulus” grossed $5.46 million.

The strong performance of those films caused “Pilot,” a Korean comedy-drama that had reigned at the box office for the last two weeks, to drop to second place. Additionally, the abundance of fresh releases boosted the total weekend box office earnings across the country to approximately $12.4 million.

Experiencing a 45% decrease in altitude from one week to the next, the movie “Pilot” grossed $2.73 million during its latest weekend. This brings its total earnings over the past three weekends to $26.7 million. In Korea this year, only four films have amassed a greater total, and with this achievement, “Wonka” is now predicted to rank fifth for the year 2024.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the newly released Korean movie “Land of Happiness” debuted at the third spot, raking in $1.57 million over the weekend. Over a span of five days, it amassed an impressive total of $3.12 million. This film serves as another compelling cinematic exploration into Korea’s turbulent political landscape during the late 1970s, a theme that resonated strongly in last year’s top-grossing movie “12.12: The Day.”

Over the weekend, “Twisters” ranked as the third most successful new release, earning approximately $1.61 million and capturing 9.3% of the market share during its three-day run from Friday to Sunday. From its five days in theaters, including preview screenings a week prior, it has amassed a total of $2.17 million.

In its debut weekend, the Korean animation film “Heartsping: Teenieping of Love” dropped from second place to fifth. Over the past 12 days, it has generated a total revenue of approximately $4.52 million, with earnings of $854,000 during that period.

“Comedy-drama ‘Victory’, a Korean production centered around cheerleading, debuted at the New York Asian Film Festival last month, and ended up in sixth position. Over the weekend, it garnered $636,000 and accumulated a total of $1.36 million over a five-day period.”

The movie version of the “Seventeen Tour” titled “Follow” began screening in cinemas and ended up in seventh place based on ticket sales earnings of approximately $339,000 over the weekend. In local box office rankings that consider attendance numbers instead, it placed tenth. To date, it has made a total of $843,000 from 45,000 enthusiastic K-pop fans.

“During the past weekend, ‘Despicable Me’ took eighth place with earnings of $300,000. To date, its total box office gross has surpassed $10.2 million across four weekends, placing it as the 14th highest-grossing film in Korea this year.”

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that “Inside Out 2” continues to dominate the Korean box office scene, holding strong as the highest-grossing import film of the year and the third top-earner overall. Over the past week, it has added an impressive $195,000 to its total earnings. Since its release on June 12, this remarkable sequel has amassed a staggering $62.6 million at the box office.

The duo of Deadpool and Wolverine seems to have had a shorter run. They managed to garner $188,000 over the weekend just gone and have accumulated a total of $15 million since their release on July 24 (the same day as “Despicable Me 4”).
