Critics often praise Apple TV+’s satirical series The Studio for its ability to mirror reality, but it seems that in actuality, the show’s impact might be reversed. The real world appears to be mirroring elements of The Studio. For instance, HBO is currently developing a series about the Jonestown massacre, with creators Bill Hader and Daniel Zelman, as reported by Deadline on April 23. Notably, a screen adaptation of the Jonestown massacre was also a significant plot point in the pilot episode of The Studio. In that episode, Seth Rogen’s character, who is the head of a studio, is given the task of producing a movie based on an absurd intellectual property his studio owns – Kool-Aid. To assert his creative integrity, he endeavors to fulfill this assignment by acquiring the rights to a Martin Scorsese script about the 1978 mass murder-suicide at Jonestown where more than 900 people perished after drinking poisoned Kool-Aid. However, in a twist, he ultimately backs out at the last moment and creates an enemy of the renowned director forever.
The adaptation by Hader and Zelman will be structured as a television series instead of a film, which should mean fewer studio complications. Let’s find out what Scorsese thinks about this development.
