Konami Confirms That Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 Is in Development. Company Doesn't Want to Repeat Past Mistakes

Update (September 11)

As a dedicated gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen the evolution of Metal Gear Solid from its humble beginnings to the stealth masterpiece it has become today. The announcement of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 is like a breath of fresh air for me and countless others who have grown up with this iconic series.

Konami has officially announced that they are working on “Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2” according to the latest episode of Production Hotline. To avoid past errors, particularly those surrounding the launch of Vol. 1, the company is making sure to approach this project more carefully.

Concerned about the rocky debut of Vol. 1, with its multitude of problems, we’re determined to avoid a similar scenario. As Noriaki Okamura put it, “We simply need some patience from everyone.

As for the titles that may end up in the collection, Okamura said:

We possessed high-definition versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, though not the first one. Regrettably, many games released after those don’t have existing high-definition ports available for us to utilize. Some games are in HD already, but those tend to be large-scale titles, which come with their own set of challenges.

Currently, Konami hasn’t disclosed any tentative launch date for the upcoming “Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2”.

Original news (August 28)

Since Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is about to launch this year, and it’s been nearly a year since the debut of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1, fans are curious: what comes next? It looks like Konami may be planning to introduce a new installment of the series, possibly by releasing the second version of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection in stores.

Hints about a collection containing the games Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid 5, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker being worked on first appeared in June 2023. Keen enthusiasts spotted references to these titles hidden within the code of the website Konami launched. This suggested that remastered versions of these games were coming soon.

In the ensuing months, researchers found relevant files from Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 that supported the earlier hypotheses. Later in November 2023, David Hayter, the original voice actor for Solid Snake, posted a picture on social media with a figure of the character from the fourth game, accompanied by an intriguing commentary.

Had a pretty cool meeting the other day…

Noriaki Nakamura, a representative from Konami, has recently discussed the possibility of the “Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2”, initially linked to the rumored fourth installment bundle. When questioned by IGN about the future plans for Metal Gear Solid 4, a game that currently can only be played on PlayStation 3, he responded:

We’re definitely familiar with the situation involving Metal Gear Solid 4. Unfortunately, we aren’t able to reveal much about it right now as Volume 1 encompasses the entirety of MGS 1-3… and I’m sure you can infer the rest!

It appears that the eagerly anticipated remaster of Metal Gear Solid 4 is currently being developed and is expected to be part of a larger collection, despite the fact that Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 includes five games rather than the usual three (as Nakamura did not include Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake). If Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 is launched, it should be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch, much like its predecessor.
