As a cinephile who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous iconic franchises, it is always intriguing to follow the careers of actors who have graced our screens with their presence. Kit Harington‘s journey through the world of Westeros and now the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been nothing short of captivating.
Currently, it seems Kit Harington won’t be reprising his role in not just “Game of Thrones,” but also the Marvel Cinematic Universe for now. In 2021, he made his first appearance in the MCU as Dane Whitman in “Eternals.” Although his character was initially a minor role, there were plans to establish him as a significant figure within the universe. The post-credit scene of “Eternals” hinted at Dane transforming into Black Knight in an upcoming “Blade” film.
As a devoted Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) enthusiast, I eagerly watched “Eternals” with high expectations, only to be left hanging at the end when it hinted at a potential sequel. Unfortunately, this Chloe Zhao-directed blockbuster fell short of the box office mark, raking in $402 million globally – far from Marvel’s usual benchmark. Rumors are swirling that plans for a “Eternals” sequel have been shelved, and Kit Harington’s Black Knight character may not be returning as expected due to the revisions happening with Mahershala Ali’s “Blade” movie. The future of Harington in the MCU remains uncertain.
Although the actor declined to reveal if he’ll carry on with Marvel productions during a recent GQ interview, he did humorously comment about his short stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: “I won’t pretend I accepted that role for its uniqueness; if Marvel comes calling, you simply can’t refuse.”
For approximately two years, Marvel has been working on a fresh take of “Blade” featuring Ali, but the project has encountered several challenges during its development. The film was officially announced in July 2019, preceding “Eternals,” which established Dane Whitman’s link to Blade by about two years. Bassam Tariq initially signed on to direct “Blade,” but he left in September 2022, just around two months before the film was set to start production. Throughout the years, various screenwriters have been attached to the project, including Stacy Osei-Kuffour from “Watchmen” and Michael Starrbury. On June 12, it was disclosed that director Yann Demange was leaving the movie, with Eric Pearson (“The Fantastic Four,” “Black Widow”) joining as a new screenwriter.
Regarding Harington, he’s choosing to avoid the limelight associated with the franchise at present. Initially, he considered reprising his character from “Game of Thrones” in a potential spinoff series centered around Jon Snow. However, due to lack of an appealing narrative that justified his return, he decided against it in the end.
He shared with GQ that HBO approached him with an idea, to which his initial response was a decline. However, he pondered over the possibility of telling a compelling post-war story about a soldier. He felt there could still be something significant to share in this narrow scope. After several years of back-and-forth development, they couldn’t find enough excitement for it. In the end, he decided to step away, fearing that further development might lead to something subpar, which none of them desired.
Additionally, Harington mentioned that there’s a considerable amount of history attached to portraying Jon Snow and re-entering the “Jon Snow” universe.
He also mentioned that this issue might have been a part of the problem. In essence, he feels it’s crucial to cut all ties with the past project, considering we’re not too far removed from it. The show has such a profound impact on his life that it could be the most defining work he ever does. He met his wife there, made children, formed lifelong friendships, and is even recognized because of it. However, the show also poses a challenge in his quest to move away from it, as it’s difficult for others to see him as something else if he remains connected to it.
