Actor Kit Harington, known for his role as Jon Snow in ‘Game of Thrones‘, shares an interesting story about how one of his young co-stars aided him with lines during a crucial scene. During season 6, Jon visits Bear Island to gather House Mormont for his army prior to the Battle of the Bastards, which aimed to retake Winterfell. Upon arrival, he meets Lyanna Mormont, portrayed by Bella Ramsey, who offers her house’s forces to help Jon reclaim Winterfell from the cruel Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) and his associates.
During an interview with Interview Magazine, Harington and Ramsey reminisced about their initial scene together. Ramsey had assisted Harington with his lines during this instance. Harington admired his fellow actor’s professionalism, noting the “unusual” assurance and clarity he displayed. In the scene where Jon requested soldiers from Lady Mormont, Ramsey mentioned that they silently mouthed their line to help Harington when it seemed he was having trouble. Here is their conversation:
In an interview with Interview Magazine, Harington and Ramsey looked back on their first scene as co-stars, where Ramsey had helped Harington memorize his lines. Harington appreciated Ramsey’s professionalism, commenting on the “unusual” level of confidence and clarity he exhibited. When Jon asked Lady Mormont for soldiers in a subsequent scene, Ramsey explained that they both silently mouthed their line to Harington when it appeared he was struggling. You can read their exchange below:
Kit Harington: I distinctly recall our encounter – it was the initial instance that required us to approach you, seeking your assistance in the form of soldiers.
Bella Ramsey: Oh yeah, I remember that.
Harington: Allow me to offer a slight twist in my words; there was an uncanny sense that you seemed almost like a distinct child actor entity. Our reaction was something like, “They’re talented.
Ramsey: Aw, that’s sweet.
Harington remarked: Your self-assuredness and lucidity were remarkably uncommon in a youthful performer. It wasn’t as if I were collaborating with a child; it was more like I was working alongside a seasoned professional.
Ramsey: It’s odd to me now, looking at 11-year-olds, to recall that I was that small and that young. At the time, I didn’t feel so small, but it seems strange to me now. You might not remember this, but during that scene, I was rehearsing your lines by mouthing them to you. I have a bit of regret for that now, as the memory is quite clear to me.
Harington: Yes!
Ramsey was expressing something along the lines of, “Wow, that’s too bad,” but originally, it stemmed from a naive intention of trying to help Kit who seemed to be having trouble with his lines. So, I simply whispered the lines to him.
Harington: I recall your assistance, and it was rather embarrassing. [Chuckles] However, I appreciate it. I guess I’ve decided to brush it off my memory.
Ramsey: Thank you. But honestly, I’d rather not remember it, as it’s quite aggravating. Can’t help but wonder, how bothersome could it be?
Harington admitted he wasn’t very confident at all. Instead of feeling secure, he found himself thinking, “Oh no, I need to improve. I didn’t feel prepared enough with my lines, underestimating the talent of this child actor who outshone me.” Although it’s not a contest, you can’t help but feel a little intimidated when someone is performing circles around you in your role as Jon Snow.
What This Means For Game Of Thrones
Bella Ramsey Won Over Kit Harington During Their First Scene Together
In the same interview, it was disclosed that Ramsey’s debut role was on Game of Thrones while they were still a child actor. The lack of prior experience turned out to be advantageous because it meant they weren’t apprehensive on set and uncertain about pursuing acting as a career. Interestingly, Ramsey recalled remembering not only their own lines but also those of their co-star in the scene, a skill that left Harington impressed and strengthened the bond between them, which is evident in their performances.
Kit Harington, known for portraying Jon Snow in Game of Thrones from its initial pilot through to the final episode, has experienced other difficult situations on set. These include an injury he inflicted upon himself that disrupted filming during season 3 and affected costumes, as well as a close call while riding a dragon. Additionally, Harington has spoken openly about his battles with mental health, which were exacerbated by the show’s intense focus and popularity. After completing the series, Harington took a one-year break to prioritize his personal wellness.
